I think it’s been a little while since the last round of this type of thread, so let’s start it up again.
Here’s some stuff I’ve recently acquired:
The Threshold Houseboys Choir Amulet Edition. It’s a work in progress from Peter Christophersen (of Coil fame; the guy who arguably invented industrial music). Quiet electronica with some chanting, not quite jazzy in spots.
A Wound in Eternity from Farflung. It’s actually been out for a while, but I finally got around to getting a copy. Energetic spacerock that doesn’t take itself too seriously; here’s one track.
“Älä kysy kuolleilta, he sanoivat” from Eleanoora Rosenholm. Experimental pop from Finland.
The newest Meg and Dia album, “here, here, and here…” is my latest can’t-take-it-out-of-my-stereo cd. I would sort of describe Meg and Dia as a cross between Kate Bush and your choice of a female fronted pop-punk band (Paramore, etc…), tho that description is probably just unhelpful enough to be meaningless.
They have a video out right now called “Black Wedding”, which I couldn’t find a good copy on youtube, but you can find it around if you look for it. It’s great, but my favourite songs on the album are “Hug me” (based on Brave New World), “Are there giants too, in the dance”, and especially “One sail”. However, it’s one of those that I rarely skip any songs on. Great all-around.
So based on the advising of some Dopers, I picked up the new Live Jeff Beck Album.
And uh… holy shit, It’s quite good. I didn’t expect it to REALLY be that great, and I don’t really like listening to songs w/o words in them. But MAN… That stuff… I just play it again and again on my iPod now- it’s REALLY good stuff! I’m thinking of picking up his “Truth” album soon enough.
It’s been a while since I bought an entire CD by anyone, but here are some MP3s I’ve gotten and have really enjoyed over the past six weeks or so:
Danger “11h30”
If you listen to this song, you should know that there aren’t any real words to it. It was mixed that way on purpose, but people drive themselves batty trying to decipher “the lyrics.”
Dear And The Headlights “I’m Not Crying, You’re Not Crying, Are You?”
Jet Black Stare “I’m Breathing”
Meg & Dia “Monster” (I’ve heard 2 other of their songs, but they didn’t grab me)
Sixteen Horsepower “Black Soul Choir”
Ratatat “Wildcat”
The Invisible “Gonna Be Too Late”
The Soviettes “Multiply And Divide”
Smoosh “La Pump”
The Cinematics “Keep Forgetting”
Epic Hero “Falling Over You”
Sodium “Words”
Mouthful of Daisy “Lone Ranger”
The Shondes “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”
The first five songs are from bands that are new to me, but other wise it’s been a month for getting MP3s by bands I already like. I also got Wolfsheim’s song “Once in a Lifetime” back in January and forgot about it until this month when it’s a suddenly a current favorite.
infinitii, check out Smoosh. If you like Meg and Dia, you might like Smoosh too.
Interestingly enough, both of my favorite albums of this year have come from Baltimore bands - The new Dan Deacon album Bromst! and the new Animal Collective album Merriweather Post Pavilion.
Depeche Mode Sounds of the Universe IAMX Kingdom of Welcome Addiction VNV Nation Reformation, volume one Flight of the Conchords (the various new songs from the upcoming album)
I have the latest Kelly Clarkson, MF Doom, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Rick Ross albums in heavy rotation. All really good. I only got Deeper Than Rap after it got a rave review in the New York Times, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Some singles I’ve had on rotation…
“Love Sex Magic” - Ciara with Justin Timberlake
“Pennies” - The Cool Kids
“Might Like You Better” - Amanda Blank
“Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” - Cage the Elephant
“1901” - Phoenix
Looking ahead, this is actually a pretty big month for me, music-wise. The new Green Day disc, Blackout! 2 from Meth & Red, and the new Phoenix and Grizzly Bear albums at the end of the month.
Not a bad album, but a disappointment after the first 3 (Monstercan Dream being my particular favourite) - Girls Go Chopping is the only real standout track, which compared to the other albums, which each have several, is kind of sad - Get Heavy has the title track, Rock the Hell Out of You, Devil is a Loser, and Would You Love a Monsterman; Monstercan Dream had Bring it On, Blood Red Sandman, Shotgun Divorce, and Forsaken Fashion Dolls; Arockalypse had Who’s Your Daddy, Hard Rock Hallelujah, and Chainsaw Buffet. GGC is as good as the tracks on that list, and nothing’s really BAD, but nothing else is really memorable.
Not that I regret getting the album, it’ll still get relistened to often enough…just not as much as the first 3.
On a different genre altogether, I also got Tommy february6, Strawberry Cream Soda Pop Daydream, which is more or less a ‘greatest hits’ type compilation, meaning I’ve got every track on it, except the title track (Strawberry Cream Soda Pop), which is new.
Despite this, I don’t regret getting it (unlike Deadache, the disappointment hit and passed before I listened to it the first time, because I saw the track list, before getting it), as I really like SCSP.
Hi Aesiron - I remember you from the old VALIS board.
My daughter has this one & its great.
She has also just purchased the soundtrack from The Boat That Rocked & its great . I listen to it more than she does. My son feels totally betrayed by her - he hates 60s music!
I’ve never got the Conchords - I guess its cause I’m from the country that they are sending up!
Aah, actuallii I have their first album (upon researching, it’s what “La Pump” is from) around here somewhere, though I haven’t listened to it in a long long time. I don’t even remember why, it seems like I really liked it. Thanks for reminding me, I’ll have to give it another go (and maybe their second album as well, I’ve lost the plot with them for a while it seems).
Another brand new band I’m interested in (they played their first show last night, which can be found at the link below (click on the youtuber’s name for three other vids from the show), and I’ll be seeing them on Sunday), Taylor Momsen from Gossip Girl’s band Pretty Reckless. I hear she made the costumes herself.
