Question – how secure would it be to have inmates living in tents outside? I would think you’d want them locked up in the jail itself?

I know this was posted a while ago, but as an Arizona resident it’s my understanding that tent city is mostly used to house DUI convicts and other non-violent offenders with relatively short sentences. It’s like ultra minimum security prison.

I thought we knew that already, but it’s always good to have another actual authority figure weigh in on the issue. And it looks like this one might weigh pretty heavily:

Snow, whose ruling Friday came more than eight months after a seven-day, non-jury trial, also ruled Arpaio’s deputies unreasonably prolonged the detentions of people who were pulled over.

The ruling marks a thorough repudiation of the immigration patrols that made Arpaio a national political figure, and it represents a victory for those who pushed the lawsuit.

Big grats to lead lawyer for the plaintiffs Stanley Young for getting it right.

Of course, now we have to wait and see if Joe and his Deps actually conform to the court’s ruling; I suspect this thread will live at once more.

It’s secure enough for what’s suppose to be a jail. I never had a problem with the tents being used provided that prisoners have access to plenty of water, shade and did not have any medical conditions exacerbated by the heat. I do have a serious problem with ignoring sexual crimes, targeting people because they’re brown, detaining people for too long after police stops, etc., etc.

The tragedy is that the next time we discuss this issue in the abstract we’re going to have to pretend that the anti-immigrant people have some sort of worthy-of-consideration and morally sound position when it’s obvious that shit like this is exactly what they want.

There are people who are opposed to immigration without being racist. In fact, most people are only OK with immigration because it’s already very restricted in western countries.

FTR, I find the USA to be significantly more tolerant of immigration than European countries. For instance, not much effort seems to be made to track down illegal immigrants and their employers.

DOJ lawsuit settled.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to settle a lingering lawsuit the U.S. Department of Justice brought against the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in the supervisors’ meeting on Wednesday.

The lawsuit filed in 2012 alleged the Sheriff’s Office engaged in discriminatory police practices, unfairly targeted Latinos during traffic stops and worksite raids, did not provide adequate services to inmates with limited English proficiency and that the agency retaliated against the sheriff’s critics.

The settlement approved Wednesday morning comes with Justice Department oversight and will include additional training and policy changes but does no include monetary damages.

“The Sheriff’s Office put us in a situation we should never have been in,” Supervisor Steve Gallardo said, explaining the board’s decision to approve a settlement.

The case had been slated to go to trial next month.
