I’m going to assume the spoilers already posted mean I don’t have to hide anything.
The twist ending, while being a great twist from a storytelling viewpoint, bothers me. If we hadn’t had all the religious stuff going on, it’d be a great Charlie Brown ending with Jamie getting the football pulled away from him one final time. But the story as told made it clear that Jamie was special to the point of being able to part the waters (and we get various other miracles and messages from God along the way). Jamie getting left outside to die just makes it seem like God had been playing His own game of “Doofus” the whole time.
Mind you, the last guy to part the waters also got left to die just short of his goal so I suppose there’s precedent. Man, God is a dick sometimes. Mysterious ways etc etc
