Airman’s deployment has capped off a really bizarre week at Stately Doors Manor, but for me, it’s been bizarre in several good ways.
First, I got my first radio job. It’s not at a public-radio station; I wish it were. But a local AM station has hired me to engineer their weekend programming. This mostly entails making sure the stuff goes out over the air. It also doesn’t pay much, but it’s a foot in the door in a business where a lot of doors aren’t open.
Second, I’m graduating summa cum laude in 5 weeks. For the uncolleged, that means I busted my ass and got mostly As. I’ve already got my graduation gown and stuff, and hanging around the neck are red-and-blue honors cords and a shiny medallion. I look good as a graduate.
Third, I got accepted into graduate school. I’m staying at Ship to work on my master’s in communications studies. I start this spring with an internship (that led to the job – see the first item), a course on Internet broadcasting, and Introduction to Research I. After this semester, I’ll be accepted as a Candidate, which means I’ll be assigned a thesis committee and I can begin work on my thesis. All I’ll need is three more courses, and I’ll be Robin Cartwright, BA, MS.
