I received the blu ray of Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride today…and it was broken. For some reason, I’ve never seen this movie even though I love The Nighmare before Christmas. So, I"ll have to wait until I receive my replacement copy.
Go ahead and tell me how good it is…or isn’t. Open spoilers are fine.
Aside from the dark themes and animation style, it’s not a lot like Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s more serious and character-driven, a lot less musical, and is set more in the “real” world than Nightmare. The visuals are a lot more subdued, but a lot of that is because the world of the living is deliberately portrayed as being drab and plain and a lot of the movie takes place there. Nightmare is probably more fun, but Corpse Bride has the better story in my opinion.
It was okay, but it felt very rushed. The film needs another half hour minimum to build the relationships among the characters. It was seventy-five minutes of rushing from plot point to plot point and when the film reached it’s climax I was left saying, “Already? But nothing has happened yet!”
Yeah, I gotta go with the overall opinion here. If you liked Nightmare Before Christmas, you’ll like Corpse Bride, but NBC is much, much better. CB is entertaining to watch through, but NBC beats it in plot, visuals, and music.
ETA: Although I adore Remains of the Day. I have a weakness for swing.
