… as well as a couple of suspensions. It appears that public notice is given here in ATMB of the suspensions along with reasons why, was just wondering if same is done for bannings, or perhaps in a different area?
Bannings are announced here by the mods with explanations, same as suspensions.
Sometimes explanations aren’t always given for bannings–socks (Dopers with more than one screenname, or reregistering with a different screenname after being previously banned) are rarely mentioned. Ask a mod via email if you’re curious about a specific case.
Spring Cleaning.
What they said.
Bannings and suspensions are announced in ATMB. It used to be the practice that such threads were kept open for a little while for comments (but not attacks on the banned or suspended poster). Now however such threads are locked after the announcement and any comments usually surface in Pit threads.
For long-time posters, we announce the banning or suspension (usually with a few selected links) to avoid the kind of wild speculation and accusations that otherwise tended to be spewn forth. We usually close the thread to preclude discussion: we don’t think it’s fair to discuss a person, if that person is unable to respond (on account of being banned or suspended.)
Even with Pit threads, we tend to keep a careful eye, to ensure fairness.
We do not announce the removal of socks, spammers, or similar. We don’t want to give them any publicity, and we don’t want their posts to remain visible. “So-and-so was banned because of this post which offers factory-seconds condoms for sale.” Seems self-defeating, no?
Uhm, didja happen to see the pricing on those?
To make it even more obvious, this is the time for many members to re-up their subscription. Some of those members who no longer feel that the board is worth the money have decided to go out in a blaze of glory (or idiocy).
You can pick up decent second-hand ones pretty cheaply.
You might think there’d be a Google ad for used or factory second contraceptives. But, instead, I see one for The Hardy Boys Book Club.
My mother once mentioned that, during the Depression, great-Grandma and great-Grandpa didn’t have enough cash to pony up for lots of new condoms, so they just washed the old ones and used them again! I picure great-Grandma clipping the cleaned condoms to the clothesline amidst the family’s laundry.
It’s a funny story, but Mom had the bad timing to tell it during dinner. My stepdad didn’t appreciate it.
Shame your user name’s not Doctor Johnson.
Of dictionary fame?
Okay you sillybillies, it’s time to move along.
