Because I don’t have enough side projects in my life, I’ve gone and started a YouTube channel! The channel is called “Cyber What?”, and the goal is to explain cybersecurity topics to a general audience. I’m a cybersecurity professor, so this is what I do for a living, but also I’m trying to use this channel to promote my consulting business. If all goes really well, maybe the channel will get enough views and subscribers that I can monetize it, but that’s way far down the road.
I just have two videos up so far. I’m aiming to keep these between 8 and 10 minutes, and eventually I hope to spiff up the production values. My first two are longer than I’d like, and the production values aren’t terrible but are definitely in the amateur category. The sound was pretty poor on the first one before I remembered I had a mic :smack:. Still, I think it’s a decent start.
I’d love to hear your feed back and suggestions for topics to address. If you like the videos, I’d appreciate any help getting the word out.
Here’s the latest one: - YouTube
Thanks!
I suggest a ten-minute video geared to users that simply screams “DON’T CLICK UNKNOWN LINKS IN YOUR EMAIL!!!” over and over again.
And a follow-up geared to businesses - “PATCH YOUR KNOWN VULNERABILITIES!” over and over again.
One little bump. If you have a chance to look at my channel and provide any feedback, I’d appreciate it.
I did watch the one on WhatsApp. It seems okay. I’m a cybersecurity guy myself, so I don’t think I’m your intended audience.
Is your plan to explain a hack a week or something like that? That would seem to be a good idea to me.
I will take a look. The channel is a good idea.
I looked. My high level feedback is that you’ve jumped straight into relatively detailed material. This isn’t a bad thing, but I would also post some videos in the “101” category. What is a computer virus? What is malware? What is phishing? Is spam dangerous? And so on. I think you’ll build followers quicker if you post answers to the things that more people are looking for. Throw in some topics on specific incidents in the news, as those come up. This is a great way to build the subscriber base. Sprinkled among those, I’d post videos on the topics that are most likely to interest your potential customers.
You should end up with the a range of videos from “beginner” to “advanced”, which would gain you the biggest audience.
Sunny Daze, thanks for the feedback. I appreciate your input because I thought I was in the 101 category :). I’ll do some on the topics you suggest.
manson1972, yeah I was planning on a topic a week. Not necessarily a hack, but some infosec news story. Maybe a compromise one week, a legal/compliance topic one week, etc. What do you do in the field?
I’ve re-tooled my cybersecurity show and moved it from YouTube to a platform called BizVOD. I’ve shifted from going for a general audience to going for an audience of small- to mid-sized businesses. Instead of trying to explain what an individual can do, I talk more about what businesses should do. BizVOD, and its broadcast sister network BizTV are aimed at entrepreneurs and small businesses. I also decided to start going off a script, and I got my university to help me out with filming services. I still have room for improvement, but I think it’s better. I hope to eventually improve and expand this into a 30-minute show I can put on their broadcast network and get sponsors.
