So, after this example of self-righteous vitriol, I went and had a look at the closed thread. Currently, we have around 4,000 paying members. 81 of them posted in that thread. 48 of them posted exactly once to that thread. (Of those 48–along with several who posted twice or three times–a number of them only posted questions for or jokes directed toward other posters.) So, out of the people who might be putting on their jackal suits and getting ready for a feeding, fewer than 2% actually participated in the thread and even fewer actually joined in any nasty behavior.
I do not promote explicitly nasty behavior, but is it just possible that we have a bit of an overreaction, here?

Look, people, it’s not junior modding to say that there is certain behavior which, while permitted in the Pit, is still assholish. Nor is claiming that people shouldn’t be over-the-top assholes the same as saying we should all sit around the pit jacking each other off and trading kitten pictures. Of course, if you come into the Pit, you should be prepared to be flamed. But some people take it too far. I recall a Pit thread in which one member (whom I will not name) began taunting another member’s infertility, and saying it was a good thing she couldn’t reproduce. That’s just fucking cruel, and while it was deemed to be within the rules (no mod called him on it), in my opinion it’s not something a decent human being would say. There’s a ground in-between the extremes; people. Sometimes it’s referred to as ‘middle ground.’ Visit it some time.
I’ll probably be away from the computer tomorrow, so I will have to respond to requests that I have sex with myself at some other time (perhaps Saturday).

Boy, do you not grok the concept of “flame” - there’s no such thing as “too far”, barring actual rules violations.
First, you could actually make that an even more insignificant figure if you claim that there are over 65,000 members that could decide that this was such an important issue that they could have paid their $15 just to join in. Or you could say that there are millions or perhaps even billions of people that are sitting in front of their computer and could start a trial membership just to join in. Of course, many of those people don’t speak English, but they could use a translation website, I suppose.
Then, as to your 2%, I think that the percentage of Catholic clergy involved in the sex abuse scandal was not all that high. I don’t have exact figures but it seems to me that the percentage was not in the double digits. But even one would be disturbing and more than one merits some discussion. I don’t think it diminishes the point that only a few people engaged in behavior that others think is not becoming conduct. (And for those that take things literally. . .no, I’m not comparing the two groups here. That illustration was just to point out that percentages aren’t always the defining factor.) So no, by your analysis, I still don’t think it’s inaccurate to say that there was a critical mass of people that engaged in conduct unbecoming. Depending on the conduct, even a handful of people can be a critical mass.
On the other hand, to say that Autolycus is hyperbolic and overgeneralizing is quite the understatement. If he wasn’t hyperbolic and overgeneralizing, how would we know it was actually he who wrote the OP? 
So, what percent of needless cruelty do you support then? So what if it’s only 2% of the total people here engaged in nasty behavior? Meh.
Indeed, I got overly worked up, but I have been claiming all along that my OP was aimed at the behavior in general, not just that thread. My OP should have been worded better and with less vitriol, but since this is the Pit, I let my insult-slinging get my better judgment.

Whixh was my only point. If you wish to express despair over some of the (over)reactions to MizGrand’s behavior, have at it. When you describe one Pit thread with a limited number of participants of whom some smaller number behaved with an excess of vitriol as having achieved “critical mass” and declare with deep ardor your intention to defy such (mis)behavior, then I am going to point to your post as an example of being just a skosh overwrought.
Okay, I wasn’t gonna post until I was sure.
In double blind experiments using six specimens each from no less than four litters from each of the three main species of jackals, three containers of water, and six types of blood from human and four types from rabbits, and two blind guys both named Mike to keep it standard, the results were surprising. A six-week old Golden Striped pup was the only one of the Golden Stripes that seemed to smell the blood at all, but it turned out he was cheating because he’d been watching the other animals and just wanted one of the treats. Two Side-striped jackals unfortunately died, either from having their noses held under the water too long trying to get them to smell the blood, or from eating the Steak Shaped Wheatie-Glute Treatie Cutes! used to control the experiment. The Black Backed male jackals were way more concerned with sniffing the Black Backed bitches to be concerned with blood in the water, while the Black Backed bitches refused to participate, instead calling a press conference and insisting that my reference to them as “the Black Backed Bitches” was a racial slur in spite of the fact it’s their technical name and they’re not human. (Fucking Imus gets everybody so sensitive.)
So I won’t know for certain until the new litters I’ve ordered arrive, but I still think the metaphor has a problem, unless you’re talking about the jackals created in Nevada that are 15% human and 12.5% shark, which insures they’re unlikely to get cancer but that’s not so much due to the “sharks don’t get cancer” myth as the fact the 12.5% was the jackal folk’s lungs and gills, which was a really really bad idea in the Nevada desert and it really wasn’t pretty. Best you can say was that whatever you wanna call that chimera, it didn’t live long and made a tasty but high cholesterol roast.

Who decides when it goes too far on a message board? The moderators do. Someone who is not a moderator, yet tries to claim things go too far, is pretending to be a moderator (also known as junior-moderating). If it’s too much for you to handle you should hit the road Jack, but it’s not your place to decide when someone has taken it too far.

Judging from your behavior as presented, the fact that you have done nothing to be proud of probably makes that rather easy.
You say in post #52 that you want people to actually discuss the issue you raised (as if you were the first to raise it) and not talk about you. I got two questions for you:

She’s also wasting her breath, because it’s not her job to say what’s “too nasty” for the Pit. That’s the Mods’ job and they are doing it. If she has issue with how much vitriol they are allowing, then she should open a Pit thread about that specific topic and stop with the vaguely condemnatory language meant to inflict guilt on a non-specific group of nasty people who “know who they are.”
Just so I’m clear on this. The topic of this thread seems to be “How dare you get on your high horse and judge someone? Now I’m going to get on my slightly higher horse and judge you for getting on your not quite as high horse and judging someone.” That or “OMG! You agree with me!?!” Either one seems to fit.
It comes down to this. If you don’t like the amount of vitriol in the pit, don’t open it. Just as easy as putting a poster you don’t like on your ignore list. In fact, it’s easier since you don’t even have to click on anything to do it.
