Just so we’re clear, the “eye for an eye” bit was actually part of the Code of Hammurabi, and predates the Big J by 1700 years.

What’s in the Gospels (and I’m going by memory here because I don’t feel like hunting out my bible to look it up) was Jesus saying, if part of you tempts you to sin, get rid of it because it’s better to struggle along with one eye/ one hand than to spend all eternity in torment for your sins. It’s a metaphor for having discipline and self-control: acknowledge your faults and do what you can to overcome them and you’ll reap the benefits.

It’s part of the Ash Wednesday gospel, right around the part where Jesus says, when you pray, don’t make a big freaking public deal out of it; do it in private. The only one who needs to hear your prayers is God, who will hear you, but he thinks those who weep and wail and make a big honking deal out of it are hypocrites who will get what is coming to them.

Trust me, had** you** not expressed your views on suicide (which you are entitled to have!) in a cold, tactless manner in a thread devoted to the memory of a troubled young woman who took her own life, this thread would not have happened.

Had** you** acknowledged in any way, shape, or form that you understood why people were upset, that your post that started all this (the post YOU made in the memorial thread is what started this, not every other member of the SDMB by not thinking “Goshums, that Holly sure is wise and I’m wrong to be upset! My bad!”) this thread would not have gone on for as long as it has.

When it was bumped, **you had the option to think, “phooey on them, I’m right and I don’t have to listen to what they say because I’m secure in my faith!” and you didn’t. ** YOu chose to come back to it.

I was trying to make this about cooking, but the less attention she got the shriller she became and spoiled everything.

Do you need special pots? I’ve been intrigued by induction cooking. Water boils very fast, yes?

Yes, you need ferrous pots which I think includes stainless steel. I’ve been using mine for spaghetti and linguini lately and it boils about 5-6 quarts of cold water in about 35-40 minutes. And this is just one of those single “burner” plug-in models since the built-in cooktop I have is an ancient electric model that I don’t use anymore.

edit: however I think virtually all induction cooktops have a circuit that will test a pot for you so you never have to guess if it will work - the unit will let you know.

I don’t cook very often, but when I do, it’s on an induction cooktop. Direct flame-based cooking is just sooo primitive.

Sorry, if it means giving up my trusty Weber grill I’m afraid I’m going to have to quit flirting with you, spirochaetes or no.

I’d love to get one of the single burner units. I cook mostly on Hard anodized steel (Calphalon), so it’s probably cool. Soooo tempted!

My sister does really good lamb. It has a rub of basil, rosemary, garlic, fennell, lemon zest,salt, pepper, and enough olive oil to make a paste. She cuts little slits in the meat and sticks whole garlic cloves in there to flavor the meat while it roasts and throws in new potatoes and quartered fennell bulbs so they can roast in all the lamby goodness. It’s awesome.

I wish I could do lamb for Easter but my other fussy-ass sister won’t eat it

Thanks. Almost missed this. Minutes, definitely. One could only wish it were seconds. But that would require more than a 120v outlet I’m sure.

So to sum up:

JOSH is willing to be nasty and hurtful under the guise of being “honest”.

She thinks everything is about her and what she wants.

She is proud of her ignorance, disregard for others and lack of consideration for the basic rules of polite social intercourse, and considers any attempts to point out why these are bad things as trying to “make her crack”.

She will select the tiniest fragments of messages that she feels support her even when the rest of those messages, and all the messages around her, convey a far different message.

She claims she is proven right because God hasn’t personally told her that she’s doing wrong, and doesn’t seem to think that this (not to put too fine a point on it) is a literally insane view to seriously hold.

And that’s not even getting into the questionable Scriptural interpretations.

At this point I’m kind of hoping she’s a troll, because otherwise she’s a sociopath of the sort who one day will cheerfully poison the punch at the high school dance because she wants to and anyway God didn’t tell her not to.
