Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

I was very disappointed that there were no images from the dining room.

I thought it really spoke to how fragile he was that, in the midst of trying to get him to stop the attack, they called in Ivanka.

At one point during these outtakes you hear her voice giving him suggestions. The sound of the voice sounds like one she has probably used when trying to coax her kids out of a tantrum. It’s like she could soothe him, and still get him to complete his assignment, in a manner that nobody else could.

That was by design. He specifically told the White House photographer that he wouldn’t allow any pictures to be taken. Just another layer to show his consciousness of guilt.

I actually belive her if only for the fact that she didn’t give two shits about how Don was screwing over the country. To her he was just off on another circle jerk rally with his stooges and she was in a I can’t wait to leave this crap behind me mood.

But this is off topic as she wasn’t involved in last nights hearing. Could be worthy of its own thread.

I couldn’t watch the hearings last night. Can you explain this?

I got yer back on this one:

At one point, they showed on the screen Don Jr’s text messages to Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff. He was trying to get Meadows to convince Trump to make a public announcement that would stop the violence, and wrote (paraphrasing from memory): “You need to go to the mattresses on this.”

He also said something like, “this shit is bad.”

Thanks.

It only gets longer around Mother.

One thing I really wish the committee would ask the witnesses is why they think Trump didn’t foresee the potential for violence when so many other government organizations and his personal advisors did. First, it would allow the witnesses to provide anything that Trump may have been saying about what what he expected the rally attendees would do. And second, it would get under Trump’s skin to by making him look incompetent for not seeing what so many others clearly predicted and later came true. He might get so frustrated he’d have one of those “You can’t handle the truth!” outbursts and say he knew what would happen and made it happen himself.

Oh man, I would love to see him go all Colonel Jessup on us - that would make for must see TV.

On (sort of) a similar note, he did go apeshit on his “Truth Social” feed last night - same thing that he used to do on Twitter, just with a gazillion fewer eyeballs on it obviously.

Truth Social Unhinged Rant

<I’ll get this one, Your Honor.>

Better than asking a why question about trump’s hypothetical thoughts, ask, “Did you hear trump say anything that indicated he foresaw the potential for violence that his advisors warned about?”

(All those Law & Order episodes are paying off.)

I’ll bet there are some outtakes that show exactly that! They’ll probably turn up eventually.

Which shows that no matter how many times Fredo has watched The Godfather, he still doesn’t quite get what the phrase “Go to the mattresses” means. He was just trying to sound like a gangster. Which he sort of is.

It doesn’t mean “go all out”. It sort of means “prepare for war”, but mostly in the sense of establishing a defensive position. When the mob wars got bad, the mobsters would leave their homes for safety reasons and gather together in safe houses, sleeping on mattresses on the floor, while they planned their offense.

But since our snowflake Mafia retired to bed at 4:30 PM that day because they were “emotionally exhausted”, I guess they sort of did “go to the mattresses”.

I don’t think he’s fragile or uncertain, Watching those outtakes was a tutorial in the art of the deal.

Given how wired, sniffly and bloodshot Don Jr. sometimes looks, this may be more appropriate than you’d intended.

I googled ‘trump’ ‘outtakes’, and he seemed more annoyed than fragile.

One thing that struck me was how they emphasized Trump’s dereliction of duty and how he failed to fulfill his oaths. They contrasted that to the numerous other people, including Republican politicians and some of Trump’s own staff, who were scrambling to do something to defuse the situation.

I can’t help but feel that the intention of that was to show how Trump’s actions (and inactions) during the event were not serving his role as President, all to stage of claims of Executive Privilege. He can’t use the shield of the presidency when he clearly wasn’t acting in that role.

I took note of Cipollone’s attorney looking like the ultimate “deer in the headlights”. He appeared to be scared to death and quite unsure when to claim privilege. If I were Cipillone, I would have fired the guy as soon we got out of the room.

I liked Kinzinger’s way of putting it: “He did not fail to do something. He chose to do nothing.”

Interesting. I’m one of the only people in the world who hasn’t seen any of The Godfather movies. I thought the expression was “go to the mat” (from wrestling), to wit:

go to the mat

Fight until one side or another is victorious, as in The governor said he’d go to the mat for this bill. This term comes from wrestling and evokes the holding of an opponent when both contestants are down on the mat, the padded floor-covering used in matches. It has been used figuratively since about 1900.

My conclusion is that Don Jr. doesn’t know shit from Shinola and misused the phrase, thinking that “mat” was short for “mattresses.”

Prediction #1 - When Trump is indicted (please, please), part of his defense will be that he could have stopped the riot if they let him go to the capitol. A total lie of course.

Prediction #2 - No way they can prevent a MAGOT on the jury. Only takes one.
