Jane Fonda has been clapped in irons again!

She was arrested for obstructing the entrance of the Capitol building.

So it was a reference. Cool.

Protestors often intentionally do something illegal just to bring attention to their cause. I guess the theory is that if you are willing to get arrested, that shows more dedication to the cause than simply carrying a sign peacefully. And let’s face it, a peaceful protest probably gets buried on page 10, while “X was arrested!!!” can boost you up to the front page.

It doesn’t happen often, but on rare occasions police have been kinda like “meh, whatever” and haven’t arrested the protestors. Sometimes the protestors really get pissed off when that happens since they want to be arrested to bring more attention to their cause.

I’m sure Hanoi Jane knew exactly what she was doing and planned on ending up in cuffs.

This. She’s a bit of a moron. It’s like condemning Trumps wife or kids for being dumbasses.

Hanoi Jane handled herself carelessly and unwisely, in 1972. For those still bearing a grudge against her after she’s had half a century to reflect on the incident, and has taken a number of opportunities to apologize and to wish she could take it all back: Are you the same person you were in 1972? Would you, today, make the same decisions you did 50 years ago? Lessee, in 1944 Germany was still into slaughtering Jews & others. Did they still deserve the world’s scorn in 1994? 1974 even? I’m curious about the mindset that can turn the page on genocide in, what, 10 years? But insists on holding a personal grudge against a privileged ditz (even by woman in 1972 standards) who, nevertheless, wanted the US soldiers to be back home as badly as they themselves wanted to be.

Well she’s an irrelevant old hag who probably has a larger carbon footprint than the average American. Not much more to be said about her.

Some things are unforgivable.

many of the unforgivable things she supposedly did have been proven to be false. Just saying.

I’ve seen the pictures of her with enemy troops. Don’t really give a fuck what her apologists think or say.

She’s been doing the right thing for so many decades now, I keep hoping some day I’ll find it in my heart to forgive her. It hasn’t happened yet.

Here’s an honest and quick summary for anyone who doesn’t know what we are on about.

Everyone knows what the fuck you’re on about. It’s tired and boring. Try just not posting in threads about her if you’re still so upset about it. Jesus.

Septimus, I’m sorry your thread about her environmental activism has been hijacked so to hell.

LMAO

I understand, truly I do. She has done a great deal to make amends, and it’s true that the worst of the accusations were unfair.

But you see, my Dad was over there. He was cold, wet, exhausted, being hunted by the enemy on the orders of his nation. Most of our friends didn’t get their Dads back. I went to their funferals before I saw him alive again. I was four years old bearing the weight of the knowledge that he might not return. I got back a violent shell filled with an unpredictable something that wouldn’t get a name for a couple more decades.

Whatever she did or didn’t do, she greatly increased the burden of men and women who were already in absolute hell. She took the one thing that kept them going - the honor of serving the nation - and she trampled it in the mud. Morale went straight down the tubes after her little performance.

And it WAS more than just the Hanoi photos. She was a poster child for a movement that took its protest to the soldiers instead of to the leadership. Those men and women came home to find themselves openly derided and even spat upon. People threw pig’s blood on my Dad. Was she part of that particular action? I dunno. But her actions helped to make it “cool” to blame the troops and gave momentum to the incredibly destructive force that has driven so much of American societal dysfunction ever since.

And I would argue that she has not really addressed that part of her sins. She says “Oh it was such a mistake, posing for that photo.” Well no, it was a heckuva lot more than that.

I disagree. If septimus had started a thread on environmental activism and somebody else had brought up Jane Fonda and used her past to discredit the movement, it would be fair to call it a hijack. But that’s not what happened.

Septimus brought Jane Fonda into the thread. Her name is literally the first two words of the title. So Jane Fonda and her reputation is the central part of the thread topic. If it’s fair to praise Fonda for her environmental activism, it’s equally fair to condemn her for the bad causes she’s embraced.

Septimus started a thread on Jane Fonda getting arrested for environmental activism. Not on Jane Fonda in general. Not on history in general. Several posts in this thread are nothing but shitting on Jane Fonda and not commenting on Septimus’s OP. If people want to do that, they should go start a thread in the pit and complain about Jane Fonda there.

Given that ecg, the mod of this forum is in this thread using the same insulting nickname, it’s pretty clear that the board doesn’t care about the thread going offtrack. But I do, since I was interested specifically in what JF is doing right now. Not what she did 40 years ago.

I’ve seen pictures of President Trump saluting enemy troops. Do you find that equally unforgivable?

This thread is so far off the rails now, that I think it is the Pacific Ocean.

You don’t? For such an extremely rare event it sure happened to a lot of people, and if Jane Fonda had been involved it wouldn’t be that hard to find out, would it?

IF you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know I despise Trump for multiple reasons.

Sorry, I don’t pay attention to opinions of most anonymous people online.

I’m sure pictures exist of almost everybody posing with someone we consider “the enemy”. Just seems like a low bar to never forgive.

Hogwash. Septimus made a conscious decision to declare an obviously controversial figure an “American Hero.” If he didn’t expect that to become a matter of discussion then he certainly should have.

I’ve done my best to acknowledge both sides and to make sure the factual story enters the discussion. But she’ll never make “Hero” status in my book.
