We are all familiar with the Yeoman’s ginormous beehive. My question: in the context of the show, was that supposed to be her real hair? Did she have to do it up every day? Did the Enterprise have an automated hair dressing machine, like the food slots?
I know IRL it was a wig (or more properly, a hat).
And how would someone make that with real hair? Is it even possible to make a cross weave pattern?
Bonus question: who thought that was a good look? man the 60s were weird.
To my knowledge, it has never been discussed anywhere, either on or off the show, other than to note its existence. In “The Enemy Within,” I believe she’s briefly shown teasing it in her quarters, but basically it’s just there. We never see her actually putting her hair up. (It was quite disheveled later in that episode, and I think maybe in “Charlie X,” but it never came all the way down either.)
In The Making of Star Trek, it’s noted that the ***TOS ***hair stylist was a woman named Pat Westmore: “Pat … frequently has to exercise quite a bit of ingenuity in creating widely different hair styles… Pat uses very few wigs, working mainly with falls, wiglets, and braids.”
Roddenberry wanted even the men’s hairstyles to look exotic, but they refused to do anything other than point their sideburns. Leonard Nimoy, of course, had to keep the Spock cut offstage, but it was so short it didn’t really matter. It only looked “alien” when it was combed down and given a good coat of hairspray.
I’ve read that same information in a number of sources over the years. Roddenberry was pushing for unusual hairstyles, but the male actors pushed back, noting that they had to live normal lives outside of the studio, and didn’t want to have to deal with crazy hair. Thus, the pointed sideburns were a compromise.
Did they get as far as any designs or prototypes? Considering what they came up with for Rand, the mind boggles at what we might have seen on Kirk and Spock.
Although, I can’t really think of any examples other than Rand, and she was only on for 8 episodes. Apart from her, weren’t the hairstyles pretty conventional?
In the space fest ‘Andromeda’ everyone has gorgeous hair, all wigs, of course. They mention more than once that ‘nano-bots’ enable them to maintain their elaborate hairstyles and hair colors. Tyr and Trance had remarkably big elaborate hair, dreadlocks and yard long tiny braids. Rommie had blue black hair, gave it a shake, and it turned dark red.
As indicated above, the Enterprise-D had a dedicated barbershop and barber (Mot). I would assume there was one on Kirk’s ship as well—they had a gym, a theatre, a chapel, a bowling alley, a botanical garden, and God knows what else. Failing to provide a barbershop/hairdressers would be a major oversight, I think.
It looks like an inverted basket woven from thick-ish sections of hair. Like someone started by dividing the hair as one would to prepare for braiding, but then instead of braiding it, made a basket.
(I don’t think it could be done with one end of the hair still attached to someone’s head, but my spatial awareness is lacking so I could be wrong.)
