Representative Porter has brought out her latest whiteboard with a reminder:

Who’s the guy?
Elon Musk
Today is my last day before flying down to Mexico for our first vacation in three years. While I’m ostensibly working today- let’s admit it, I’m not going to get anything done. Mentally I’m already on the beach.
I’m very disappointed that the hearing is at primetime instead of during the day. Since I’m really just phoning it in today, watching the hearings while I’m “working” would’ve been perfect. I’m going to be too busy packing to really enjoy watching the hearings tonight.
It’s just not fair, dammit.
My next door neighbor has an insurrectionist pouring concrete in his backyard. This flag -a full sized one- is on a pole mounted on the back of cement mixer parked on the street, the flag is directly in line with my front door.
Note that the quote on that flag is bullshit. They took a real George Washington quote but changed about half of his words so that it meant something completely different than what he said. Here is his real quote:
“A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite; and their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories as tend to render them independent of others for essential, particularly military, supplies.”
George was referencing the need for the United States to be able to supply itself with enough military equipment to defend itself. That’s it. It had nothing to do with private citizens being able to overthrow their government.
From what I’ve gathered, it sounds like tonight will be a discussion of what Trump and other politicians were doing during the riot.
Apparently, many of those right wing congresspeople who later dismissed this as a trivial matter will be shown on video cowering in fear. It is intended to embarrass them.
I’m also hoping that we get video of Trump gleefully watching the attack. That I’m not as sure of - we may only hear testimony about these facts.
(I believe that two witnesses we will see are both staffers who resigned after 1/6, ostensibly as a response to witnessing Trump’s support for the insurrection).
And how many of those right wing congresspeople actually abetted the attack? I’m kinda disappointed that the committee hasn’t put their feet to the fire.
Oh, come now! You can say it! It’s easy to pronounce! Just take it slow: “Joooooos”.
I dunno, I kind of like the ersatz quote. It means it’s okay to shoot cops who come to arrest a woman for aborting her fetus or anyone handing out water to voters waiting in line at the polls.
Ongoing criminal investigation…
Responding to this comment by @wolfpup from the January 6th Hearings thread:
Here’s a newflash: Trump is not going to be the Republican nominee. Republicans are agonizing that DOJ won’t take him out of the running once and for all by indicting him. They know he can’t win, but they are terrified of alienating his base.
The McConnell wing of the Republican party are wetting themselves in the hope that Trump won’t declare his candidacy before the mid-terms – but if Trump is feeling threatened by DOJ, he probably will. I hope he does.
Put it this way: The longer Trump is in the race, the better for Democrats.
We’re already getting DeSantis campaign ads for president up here in Oregon. Make of that what you will.
I wish I had your level of confidence in that. How do you square that with the fact that around two-thirds (70% according to some polls) of Republicans believe Trump’s blatant and obviously false election lie? There seems to be a deep level of insanity permeating the current political zeitgeist.
My understanding is that there’s a difference between believing the Big Lie and continuing to support Trump as the nominee in 2024.
Although many Republicans claim to still believe the Big Lie BS, if you ask them if Trump should be their standard bearer for 2024, a significant number they say they want someone new and Trump’s time is over.
It costs them nothing to say they believe the Big Lie. But they are in fact moving on from Trump for 2024.
DeSantis scares me way more than Trump, and that’s saying something. So I hope Trump stays in the race for now.
It’s a hard call to make. DeSantis is (AFAICT) an effective politician and also a far-right radical, and hence very dangerous. Trump, OTOH, is stupid, batshit crazy, and pathologically narcissistic. What’s worse?
They’re both fascists and either will be a disaster for the country, but DeSantis is far more focused on knowing how to manipulate the levers of power.
DeSantis already tried to impose his will on and punish corporations such as Disney because Disney doesn’t support his “don’t say gay” and anti-LGBTQ campaign; he has created a private law enforcement goon squad under the guise of an “election integrity” enforcement team; has aggressively forced his horribly gerrymandered map on the State of Florida. He is all in on the abortion ban and has imposed crazy book bans in Florida schools. He threatened to withhold salaries from teachers who teach sex education in schools.
In short, he’s scary as fuck. But he will stay further under the radar than Trump and will accomplish more destruction in a focused way than Trump. And he doesn’t have Trump’s baggage.
I believe Trump will be taken out by criminal charges between the Georgia and DOJ investigations for his election interference. It’s going to take longer than many would like, but I truly think it’s going to happen.
I take no position on the Josh Hawley videos that were show today, insofar as their importance in the actual hearings. But I do think they are important because they make him a laughing stock.
This may be the most significant thing that can be done about Trump and his ilk because it’s the one thing they can’t abide: They cannot stand to be laughed at.
I don’t think it matters much to them how much evidence is brought to bear. We’re talking about people who went to court and lost 60 or so times, but still talk about how the election was stolen with utter seriousness.
They need to be laughed at. Uproariously. Like Jonah’s uncle on Veep, pointing and shrieking with laughter. And I really think it may be the only thing that can truly hurt them at this point.
trump’s charisma is such that his troops will do all kinds of crazy shit in his name. Does DeSantis have anything like that? Does anybody want to die for this fucker?
I love the video of Josh Hawley – he of the upraised fist of solidarity – running like a scared rabbit to the tune of Yakkity Sax after the Capitol building was breached.
