Jedward

There’s this British pop duo called Jedward that I (an American) occasionally see on British quiz shows and they fascinate/scare me.

Jedward is a set of blonde Irish twins named John & Edward that wear suits, have big hair and babble incoherently a lot much like the baby twins in that YouTube video. Except they’re 20 years old (yowza, I would have pegged them more for … 12?)

They became well-known after appearing on X-Factor in 2009, and then represented Ireland in the 2011 Eurovision song contest.

Here’s some of their stuff on YouTube.

They remind me of Ed Grimley and Walter & Perry.

The twins randomly popped into my head yesterday and I am sort of spooked by them.

I needed to start a thread on them because:

  1. I want non-UK folks to become acquainted with them and take away some of my burden.
  2. I want UK folks to [del]rant about[/del] explain to us WTF this is all about.

I quite like them - they’re so daft and enthusiastic. They’re hilarious on Twitter.

Irish and British are not the same thing when you’re talking about someone from the ROI.

Unlike Jedward, one of these things is not like the other.

Jedward have always fascinated me. I went from hating them to being kind of enthralled by them. They seem like a pair of 8 year olds in 20 year old bodies.

I’m digging their cover/mashup of Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby.

My apologies for the British/Irish mixup. I think of them as British because I see them on British-based shows but I am indeed well aware that they are Irish.

Thanks for straightening me out!

They were in The X Factor a couple of years ago. They didn’t win, but they got quite far in the competition with ridiculous routines and lots of people voting to keep the annoying act on the show. After that, they’d made enough of a splash to start getting offers to appear on panel shows and the like. I think they’ve even got a record contract, though I haven’t exactly followed them closely.

They’re pretty much a national joke - everyone knows who they are, everyone says they hate them, but they’re clearly popular enough that they keep getting work - so not everyone’s telling the truth!

I think they came 6th or 7th but they are still knocking around and I don’t know where any of the others of them are. Except Stacey Solomon, I think that was her year.

If you are looking up videos then I highly recommend their version of ‘Oops I did it Again’ from Britney week on The X Factor. That was the moment they won me over. So very weird, and yet you can’t look away.

I suspect that they are very talented, deeply weird, performance artists.

  1. I’m not from the UK BUT NEITHER ARE THEY!! They’re sorta on the daffy end of the celebrities being famous for being famous spectrum. They have charisma and are likeable. Locally (in Ireland, where they’re from :stuck_out_tongue: ) there’s no huge hatred for them. Indeed, a lot of people are impressed that they’ve forged such a career at such a young age with no apparent talent.

!!!

I like their version of Under Pressure/the Vanilla Ice remix. There’s nothing to hate there.

That’s weird tho because they’re 20. Is that a “young age” for the music business?

If they were 12 like they look, then it’d be more impressive!

Yeah but if they were 12 they’d be snotty little kids. They’re childlike but polite. Even in the music industry it’s uncommon for a 20 year old to be a millionaire, well anymore at least.

I adore them.

They may not be the most talented duo out there, but they are excellent performers and quite fun to watch.

Man, I don’t know what to say, I simply weep for the modern music scene as controlled and infiltrated so cynically by Simon Cowell productions.

What a load of crap, this Jedward. That passes for entertainment?

Couple of pikers, dressed up for show.

Only good thing with genuine talent to ever come from Cowell’s stable.

Crystal.

They’re terrible, but not laughably terrible. That’s two strikes against them.

This is classic Jedward from the British celeb gameshow,“Nevermind the Buzzcocks”:

- YouTube (part 1)

- YouTube (part 2)

that’s the first place I ever saw them. I was very surprised to find out they were in their late teens since they spent the whole episode acting like they were nine.

Just another landmark on Irelands quest to find the most annoying fucking novelty act ever. Remember, this is a country that sent an actual puppet to the Eurovision song contest.

Its an aspect of our culture that really frustrates me, there is far too much of a willingness to play to the dumb Irishman stereotype in the media over here, especially on the radio.

They are, sadly, a perpetual reminder of everything that’s wrong with the cult of so-called celebrity where you can become famous for being talentless, stupid and a vacuous waste of space. Yes, X-Factor viewers and voters, I’m looking right at you.

Ah jaysus lad relax. Not eveyone of this land represents this land.
