There’s this British pop duo called Jedward that I (an American) occasionally see on British quiz shows and they fascinate/scare me.
Jedward is a set of blonde Irish twins named John & Edward that wear suits, have big hair and babble incoherently a lot much like the baby twins in that YouTube video. Except they’re 20 years old (yowza, I would have pegged them more for … 12?)
They became well-known after appearing on X-Factor in 2009, and then represented Ireland in the 2011 Eurovision song contest.
Unlike Jedward, one of these things is not like the other.
Jedward have always fascinated me. I went from hating them to being kind of enthralled by them. They seem like a pair of 8 year olds in 20 year old bodies.
My apologies for the British/Irish mixup. I think of them as British because I see them on British-based shows but I am indeed well aware that they are Irish.
They were in The X Factor a couple of years ago. They didn’t win, but they got quite far in the competition with ridiculous routines and lots of people voting to keep the annoying act on the show. After that, they’d made enough of a splash to start getting offers to appear on panel shows and the like. I think they’ve even got a record contract, though I haven’t exactly followed them closely.
They’re pretty much a national joke - everyone knows who they are, everyone says they hate them, but they’re clearly popular enough that they keep getting work - so not everyone’s telling the truth!
I think they came 6th or 7th but they are still knocking around and I don’t know where any of the others of them are. Except Stacey Solomon, I think that was her year.
If you are looking up videos then I highly recommend their version of ‘Oops I did it Again’ from Britney week on The X Factor. That was the moment they won me over. So very weird, and yet you can’t look away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dPpaD-8Au0
I’m not from the UK BUT NEITHER ARE THEY!! They’re sorta on the daffy end of the celebrities being famous for being famous spectrum. They have charisma and are likeable. Locally (in Ireland, where they’re from ) there’s no huge hatred for them. Indeed, a lot of people are impressed that they’ve forged such a career at such a young age with no apparent talent.
Yeah but if they were 12 they’d be snotty little kids. They’re childlike but polite. Even in the music industry it’s uncommon for a 20 year old to be a millionaire, well anymore at least.
that’s the first place I ever saw them. I was very surprised to find out they were in their late teens since they spent the whole episode acting like they were nine.
Just another landmark on Irelands quest to find the most annoying fucking novelty act ever. Remember, this is a country that sent an actual puppet to the Eurovision song contest.
Its an aspect of our culture that really frustrates me, there is far too much of a willingness to play to the dumb Irishman stereotype in the media over here, especially on the radio.
They are, sadly, a perpetual reminder of everything that’s wrong with the cult of so-called celebrity where you can become famous for being talentless, stupid and a vacuous waste of space. Yes, X-Factor viewers and voters, I’m looking right at you.
