Jeopardy! 2022-23

That should have been Buttrey instead of Buttery.

In any case, I suddenly crave popcorn…

As a white kid educated in the 1960-70s, I myself did learn about it in school.

The wife and I like it. But just as with Mayim Bialik, it has its unreasonable detractors.

Some ballsy betting in tonight’s game.

Still won’t air here in Hawaii for another hour and a half. Please don’t give anything away.

I’m with you, Sam. I’ve got about the same amount of time until I get today’s episode.

I waited until this episode aired for the Pacific Time Zone, but still blurred the significant phrases.

I couldn’t help noticing the (unintentional?) pun in FJ.

Kew Gardens sounds like Q Gardens where Q stands for quinine.

Are you sure?

I can’t believe it’s not Buttery.

mmm

Me too. And as a U.S. History major in college, I was well aware of the phrase. I’ve just never in my life heard that it was used to generically mean “unfilled promise.”

@mean_mr.mustard - good one!

Andrew He bet the max in all 3 daily doubles

Perhaps your just enjoy being incredulous. Especially while eating breakfast.

According to Jeopardy fan:

This may be the first instance of a single player successfully converting a maximum possible Daily Double wager on all three Daily Doubles in the show’s history.

I was amazed when he went all-in on the last DD. He already had a big lead. It worked out, though.

Damn. You weren’t exaggerating.

Speaking of betting, did anybody else find Matt Amodio’s wager of $0 in Thursday’s FJ to be strange?

He went into FJ in second place. Sam would have had to get it wrong for Matt to have a chance; I get that. But by betting $0, he allowed John to leapfrog him into second. If Sam had been wrong, Matt would have cost himself the win.

It turned out to not matter, but that left me scratching my head.

Of the three “super-champions,” two of them really seemed off their game in their semi-final matches. And Jonathan (who if I’m not mistaken was the fourth most winning player) got bumped on day one. Not the final many people were expecting. I do like Amy Schneider but I’ll be rooting for Steve, er, Sam.

Scores at the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round:

Matt John Sam
$16,800 $12,600 $23,000

Wagers:

Matt John Sam
$0 $11,400 $10,601

Final scores:

Matt John Sam
$16,800 $24,000 $33,601
3rd place: $10,000 2nd place: $10,000 Finalist

In the semifinals, both second and third place get $10,000, so there’s no point in betting to hold on to second place.

FYI, here’s the J-Archives’ wagering advice:

Matt: You ought to wager to cover John, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $16,800. You are in Stratton’s Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $8,400 (to shut out John) or less than $4,400 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by John). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Sam.

I got a TOC FJ triple stumper!! Woot!

Yeah, I got that one, too.

I’ve been surprised by the results of several of the tournament matches. I have to admit, I thought Matt Amodio would be invincible. It seemed like he’s slowed down since his initial run. I do like Steve Martin Sam Buttrey because seeing someone his age perform so well eases the anxiety I’ve been having about aging lately.

I thought the FJ clue in Game 3 on 11/16 was unfairly worded:

While the KJV attributed Hebrews to Paul, it’s long since become widely known and accepted that Paul was not the author. As soon as I saw the clue I blurted out “Hebrews!” then said “wait a minute, it says ‘Paul’s letter,’ so that can’t be right…”
