Jeopardy! 2022-23

Yay Sam! But Schneider has to explain that bet…

Exactly right. I thought it was over when she got the question right.

Can’t wait for Monday.

Maybe she didn’t want to fun to end yet.

She bet to insure that Andrew could not win. Sam winning is better than Andrew winning because she stills gets at least one more game but if she bet more, got it wrong, and Andrew had won, the tournament is over.

Amy 2, Andrew 2, Sam 1

It’s been a good tournament. It’ll get very interesting if Sam gets a 2nd win.

I’m glad Sam got at least one. I’d like to see him take the whole thing, but no hard feelings if Amy wins next.

I thought FJ was so easy that it must be a trick question.

That crossed my mind, too. But with “Washington” and “1864” in the clue, the Jeopardy crew would easily be accused of being deliberately deceptive if they tried to assert the response should have been something about Ibsen (or some other similarly-famous contemporary).

I guessed the right answer immediately.

I answered it correctly immediately. Upon further review, I realized that if that wasn’t the correct answer, I would have absolutely no clue as to what other play might be performed in Washington in January of 1864.

That’s why the question was either easy, or impossible. 99.99% of humanity can name exactly one play that was popular in Civil War era Washington DC.

I blanked on “American.”

I couldn’t remember if it’s “My …” or “Our …” Also, it seemed like a long run from 1864 until April 1865, so the year seemed wrong. I wonder if it was ever staged after that day. Anywhere.

Dernit, I got it right and thought I was the bee’s knees!

Given the general era, my first thought was “oh, they must be getting at the play Abraham Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated” but when I thought about the specific year and date, that threw me off. I thought, why would they specify something that happened in January 1864 as a clue to something that happened more than a year later?

Edit: which I see is a point @JohnGalt made too.

Not sure if you’re being weirdly hyperbolic, but 95+% of humanity can name exactly zero plays that were popular in Civil War era Washington DC.

Yeah, I knew what play it was referencing but I had a brain-freeze and could only remember that the title included a person. Which is I guess what happened with Sam.

Yeah, I think if you asked everyone in America “What was the name of the play Lincoln was watching when he was shot?” the vast majority would have no idea.

Among people who might qualify for Jeopardy!, the percentage would surely be higher, but I’m guessing nowhere close to 95%.

As for me, I said “My American Cousin.” Close, but no cigar.

Hey, weirdly hyperbolic is what I do best!

To rephrase it more accurately: 99.99% of humanity can name 0 or 1 plays current in DC during the Civil War. If it had been anything other than Our American Cousin I would’ve been stunned.
