Without revealing any spoilers, I’ll just say that today’s (1/3/2023) episode was one of the more exciting and close games that I’ve seen in a while.
And I thought the previous day’s game was exciting! There are a few players who need to get invited back to the Second Chance tournament next time.
Bah! None off them knew “what is Tacoma?”
It could be that “major city” threw them.
- ODF, Tacoma native (with the webbed feet to prove it) and veteran the infamous “Aroma”
And no one could remember how to pronounce Pullyup, let alone spell it.
I don’t remember Puyallup ever being on Jeopardy!; wouldn’t expect most people to have ever heard of it, much less pronounce it.
No one got “what is Battery?” for the south end of Manhattan* last night, either.
* it’s an island.
Must be youngsters. There’s even an old song about it:
New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town!
The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down
The people ride in a hole in the ground
New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town!
Ken occasionally throws in some little explanatory tidbits when he’s giving an answer. When no one got “Battery” I thought he might quote that song, but didn’t.
To be fair, he was already on about the ‘electric charge’ hint.
I believe in reality “Battery Park” has nothing to do with electrical batteries. I think the location was the site of a battery of cannons to defend the harbor.
As always, check the Jeopardy Archive–the phrase was “sizable city.”
I didn’t know Battery Park had been renamed The Battery. Had I been on the show, I might have thought of it and rang in with the former; I wonder if they would have accepted it?
I’m sure they would have. The clue called it “New York’s Birthplace Park.” And as someone who lives in New York, I’ve always called it Battery Park and had no idea that changed. There are too many things in the area that still use the full name for them to not accept it.
From The Jeopardy Fan:
Just as a reminder to my readers: Ken Jennings has taped games as host until at least the High School Reunion Tournament; we’re still nowhere near the mid-point of the season. We still have many more weeks of Ken hosting!
Didn’t they have a lot more of these special games not long ago: Kiddie Jeopardy, Old People Jeopardy, various college Jeopardys, etc? They should air these things in the evening and leave regular Jeopardy alone! Especially the odious Celebrity Jeopardys.
Yes, but “electrical” is still a good hint.
Haven’t you noticed? Celebrity Jeopardy is its own hour-long show that Mayim hosts. It’s been on sporadically through the fall, on Sundays, I think. I watched one.
You’re right. It’s odious.
I’ve seen a few. If I recall correctly, Celebrity Jeopardy used to be famous people who liked to play Jeopardy and took it pretty seriously. This new version (now with Triple Jeopardy!) just seems to be people who are promoting something and it’s like going on talk shows or something. It’s played for laughs because they aren’t really very bright. I did see the Wil Wheaton one and he did very well. I imagine he will mop the floor with the other winners in the finals.
Anybody else surprised that last night’s Final Jeopardy was a triple-stumper? My comment after seeing the answer was “that’s too easy for a Final”.
It took me a few seconds to have a good guess. Because of the way the clue was phrased, I was pretty sure I was right. I like the FJ clues like that; not obvious, but can be figured out.
So I’m not terribly surprised it was a triple stumper. Without that little moment of insight, I might not have got it, either.
My first guess was Helen of Troy, but I figured out the correct response shortly after(though I worried about spelling).
