The second-place finisher on December 30 ended up with $40k. Is that anywhere near a record for seconf place?
I know. I wish I didn’t. His following seems like a cult of personality.
Adam’s $53,999 is the highest-ever regular-play non-winning score in the history of the show, and is the 21st-highest final score of all time.
When the category “Classic Flute Rock” was shown, I sat up in my chair - “Jethro Tull!, Ian Anderson!, umm Bouree, Aqualung!”
But no! No Jethro Tull, no Moody Blues. Puzzling.
Yes, Banksy is very well-known.
Where, and among whom?
I mean, I myself had never heard of Thor Heyerdahl, but when people explained that his feat was a really big deal at the time, it was taught about in schools for a long time, he wrote a book about it, there was an award-winning documentary about it, there was a successful film dramatization in 2012 that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, etc., I got it. I could say, “OK, I see why that’s something the Jeopardy writers could reasonably expect a good Jeopardy contestant to know.”
Where and how are we supposed to have heard of Banksy?
I really don’t know what to tell you except to encourage you to read newspapers and other news sources.
Most people?
I mean, even two of the contestants got it correct so it’s not like it’s some obscure piece of knowledge. He’s very famous and well-known. Not apparently by you but that doesn’t change that fact.
When the clue was revealed, I was stumped…but thought: well, it has something to do with art, and walls…so maybe Banksy? Totally pulled that out of my ass.
Part of his schtick is that he’s anonymous. How anyone can authenticate his works is beyond me.
Well, first of all, from what I can see, his work is pretty distinctive. And then I think he posts to social media about his art after it appears.
I thought that I had read somewhere that he uses a public key encryption signature but I could not verify that today.
There is only one gallery (Pest Control Office) authorized to sell his work. If you buy from them you can be 100% confident that it is authentic.
If you know of one graffiti or street artist, it’s probably Banksy. He has somehow been able to put out so much high quality art in very public spaces in the UK without being caught or identified. He’s the one street artist who gets his name in papers, and quite frequently. He’s even crossed over into the mainstream, getting some things into museums, and doing performance art with it.
In particular, he actually sold a painting in an auction, where, as soon as it was purchased, it went on to partially shred itself. (And, no, the buyer was not remotely unhappy about this, as it raised the value.)
Banksy’s art tends to be political, with an anti-establishment message, He is in fact listed on Wikipedia as a street artist, movie maker, and activist.
A documentary about Banksy was nominated for an Oscar in 2010 - that was the first time I’d ever heard of him.
Good.
Woo-hoo!
Ken!
I thought I read Mayim would be there this week. What a nice surprise to still see him hosting.
Indeed. The six-month-old source I cited above merely said “in January,” which I took to mean the beginning of the month, but it could mean later in the month. Or maybe she’s too busy with her other show to come back at all. Or maybe TPTB didn’t care for the performance of the Celebrity edition, and they’ve canned her.
I’d be okay with that.
I should think that would have been announced, or leaked to the public somehow.
More likely it’s the first option: everyone was interpreting “in January” to mean “at the beginning of January,” which is not what it actually means.
You’re right, of course. I was just being hopeful.
