Jeopardy! 2022-23

I liked that she even dressed like a stereotypical librarian. Her little blurb said she got into the field because of an off-hand comment that someone made about how her glasses made her look like a librarian, which got her thinking about that as a job.

I would think that librarians would have a leg up on some of the clues based on obscure books. But I’ve also read somewhere (here?) that librarians spend more time cataloging, sorting, and ordering books than they do reading.

I can’t believe a no-brainer bit of LOTR trivia turned into a triple-stumper. Tsk…what is this world coming to?

Nobody got the Hitchhiker’s Guide question either.

One of the contestants said “what is 37?” That number does have a place in geek culture, but it’s rather obscure. I wonder if he knew the backstory of 37 and just got the numbers mixed up in his memory.

It’s a no-brainer to Tolkien geeks, but even people who know the basics of the story might not remember the names of all the places and characters. It was on the bottom row, which is expected to be the most difficult clue in the category.

What is the significance of “37” in geek culture? I was wondering how he arrived at that number.

Did you miss the winking smilie you replied to?

From Clerks; Dante discovers that his girlfriend, Veronica, has had more sexual partners than he realized. He thought she’d only had three, but she wasn’t counting oral sex. He kinda freaks and demands to know how many guys she’s gone down on.

“Something like, 36.”
“Does that include me!?”
“37.”

It becomes a bit of a running gag.

I see; thanks.

Never got into Clerks, myself.

Perhaps it also has something to do with 1337 (‘Leet Culture).

My reflex response was the Dwarvish name. Wonder if they would have accepted it?

Yeah, I read the books and saw the movies (albeit “only” 1x each) and I didn’t know it. I guessed Rivendell. Point being, I remembered enough to know that Rivendell was a place associated with the elves, but the actual answer was more esoteric than that.

I thought Balrog (sp? Ballhog ??) Was I close?

Is that true about Orwell? Never heard that before.

They were looking for a place name. The Balrog was a thing that lived in that place…:so you get an “A” for effort.

I distinctly heard a WHOOSH as that reference went over the heads of millions of people watching.

Me included, I guess. The clues fit the category name, so I didn’t think anything of it.

Googling “Only Fans” just now tells me that there’s an internet thingy with that name, but there’s always an internet thingy with a name composed of just about any two words you can string together. Shrug.

I must have missed that episode. What was the reference on Jeopardy!?

As I understand it, OnlyFans is kind of the TikTok of porn.

Today’s FJ was another triple stumper.

I, however, actually guessed correctly on the answer. ‘Fashion’ isn’t one of my strong categories.

I got it as well. 1940s fashion fad led me to it immediately.

Like 2 of the 3 players, I went with culottes, even though I considered them more of a 60s than a 40s fad.

And today I learn that culottes were worn by the first 5 U.S. presidents. John Quincy Adams broke the trend by being the first to wear long trousers.
