Jeopardy! 2022-23

I have and it’s very good. His books on Maps, and Comedy, are also excellent.

Does anyone else root for specific contestants? Every day or just sometimes? How do you choose who to root for?

Mrs Maven & I root for a contestant who meets any of these criteria.
•We root for any excellent player on a long streak to continue.
•I am a retired Software Developer, so we root for anyone computer adjacent.
•She is a retired Librarian, so we root for anyone library adjacent.
•We both grew up - and still live - in the Chicago area, so we root for anyone from here.
•We’re Jewish (non-observant), so we root for anyone Jewish.
•We’re both seniors, so we root for anyone middle aged or older.

Otherwise, we hope for an interesting game, whatever that means.

Canadian. We always cheer for the Canadian.

Good answer! My brother has lived in Vancouver for decades. For several reasons I consider myself an honourary Canadian. I’ll add it to our list.

Apparently Stephen Fry is going to host the UK version of the show, reviving it once again. It’s set to start in October. The show will last an hour by adding an extra round, and will use a single screen instead of multiple ones for each clue.

Have any of you watched the older UK shows?

Ken will be hosting Celebrity Jeopardy as well as the daily show, because Mayim is still honoring the WGA/SAG/AFTRA strike.

On the one hand, I prefer Ken as host. On the other hand, I support the writers and don’t think ABC should air any shows until the strike is settled. On the third hand, I never watch Celebrity Jeopardy anyway, so this particular news doesn’t affect me. On the fourth hand, I am conflicted about watching the regular show before the strike ends.

Season 40 starts on Monday, Sept. 11. According to EP Michael Davies,

“We’re going to open the season with a second chance tournament for players from Season 37 who lost their initial game. Winners from that will advance to a Season 37 and Season 38 Champions Wildcard,” he said, adding that questions on these second chance episodes would be “a combination of material that our WGA writers wrote before the strike, which is still in the database, and material that has been re-deployed from multiple multiple seasons of the show.”

IOW, they’re recycling clues from previous seasons.

If you have one more hand, what celebrities are they getting as contestants if SAG is on strike?

Good question. The article I read didn’t comment on that.

The season was supposed to start with the Tournament of Champions, but the champ who was a set decorator said he wouldn’t cross the pucker line, and then several others agreed, so they rearranged the schedule.

AFAIK, there are no dates for Celebrity Jeopardy have been set. Probably hoping the strike will end soon.

“Is this a kissing strike?”

For what it’s worth, neither the writer’s nor actor’s unions have called for any fan boycotts, in general or against any specific productions, networks, or studios.
I get that this is a different situation than a finished show already in the can, but I’ve yet to see an official WGA comment on Jeopardy’s plans.

So, given all the brouhaha about the writers’ strike, Mayim and some contestants declining to participate until the strike is settled, and the use and reuse of previously written material in the first few weeks of the new season (which starts a week from Monday), are you planning on watching or boycotting season 40?

My wife and I support the writers (and SAG/AFTRA), and are probably not going to watch. We’re discussing whether to record them and watch later, if the strike is settled soon.

Yes, it’s a purely symbolic gesture and will have no real world impact, but we feel strongly about supporting creators’ rights.

I’ll be watching.

I will watch.

mmm

If they’re not using scab writers, how is the show doing anything objectionable?

They’re reusing material from previous seasons. So there’s the issue of players possibly recognizing the clues (yes, not very likely), and the fact that the writers are presumably not being compensated for the reuse of their work.

Also, there’s the principle of supporting the union, whether or not these particular writers are being harmed in this particular case.

I’ll be watching.

I haven’t watched since Alex died, so no.

If I was watching, I would stop in support of the strike.

I have come to realize that Jennings is a better Jeopardy host than Trebek was.
