Jeopardy discussion

What I find very interesting about Amy is that she is clearly very knowledgeable, very academic, and knows obscure stuff. And yet her best categories are pop culture, especially very recent stuff, like popular music or recent popular films. That’s not what I’d expect from an intellectual.

Indeed. I don’t know how old she is, but I’m surprised that she really seems to know stuff about recent music that I don’t even have a clue about. (reason number 17 I haven’t tried to get on the show. Yet)

And among her weakest categories is classical music, including opera. That’s very surprising.

Did anybody get the French artist’s granddaughter, or something like that? I’d never heard or her or grandpa.

I did. Her name was Berthe Morisot, and she was one of the Impressionists. I admit that I knew her solely because of The Great Courses class on Impressionism.

Average Coryat:
James: $30,576
Ken: $27,928
Matt: $27,913
Amy: 26,980

So slightly worse than Ken and Matt, but not by much. Really, it’s crazy that James didn’t last longer.

it seems that if there are 2 strong contestants that can double team, that is when a streak winner goes down.

James had a penchant for making very large DD bets, which is of course how he got his winnings average so high, while Amy bets to protect her lead when she has one. Hers may be a better long-term strategy.

I didn’t see James’s losing game. Was he undone by an all-in DD wager that he missed?

No, but in his losing game, he only found one Daily Double, and it was early (it may have been the first clue), so he only got $1,000 from it. Emma Boettcher, who beat him, found both DDs in Double Jeopardy, and got both of them right, getting a total of $10,600 from the two of them. The second Daily Double put her ahead of James, and she remained ahead of him for the rest of the game. The Daily Doubles did make the difference.

That’s from Jeopardy Archive. The game aired on Monday, June 3, 2019.

Two and a half years ago?!

Where does the time go?

His strategy wasn’t really as risky as it looked. He would bet big based on how many questions were left, knowing that if he lost it all he still had a chance to recover.

I’d never heard of her, either. My guess was Cassatt.

I think I have a better % correct on FJ than Amy does. But she just crushes the competition in DJ, and it doesn’t matter. In her 39 games, maybe 2 have not been runaways.

Agreed.

42 or 43. There seems to be some uncertainty about her age, one google hit saying she’s in her late 30’s.

They’re replaying yesterday’s show where I am. WTF!

Hmn, could there have been a challenge to the results of today’s show?? (I can’t think of anything that was challengeable, but…?)

Something big did happen.

But if there was a challenge to today’s show that forced a repeat, how’s come you and I both saw today’s show today?

Yeah, it doesn’t really make sense as a theory unless it happened a lot of places. Or even then–surely challenges to results would have happened weeks ago, when the game actually was filmed. So I take it all back!

This is more likely to be a ‘glitch in one market’ situation. (Though if it was more widespread, people are going to want to know why.)

Brian

Wow! That happened.
