I was able to guess Bangladesh pretty quickly; I must admit, I was surprised that it is the only country in the world whose English name ends in H.
According to Wikipedia, Bangladesh has a population of 163 million and it’s land area is approximately 57,000 square miles, slightly smaller than the state of Georgia. Talk about crowded!
The New York Times has an article about Amy’s performance on the show (that’s a gift link, so should be accessible to everyone). It notes that when she finally lost, “she handed out thank you notes to the crew”. I’m impressed; I doubt doing that would occur to me.
“It wasn’t just a feeling of sadness, there was a sense of relief,” she added. “It was so exhausting.”
It’s also interesting that it ended in November, so she’d gone through all of that knowing that the rest of the world wouldn’t find out what had happened until months later. So surreal. I often forget that game shows generally aren’t live or taped just before they air.
It was 31 years ago for me (and I won slightly less than $1.4 million), but IIRC, they wait 60-90 days after the air date before issuing the check. I think they want to make sure you didn’t break any rules, engage in some form of cheating, or otherwise violate the terms of the contract.
No, they pay you in one lump sum, and don’t issue the check until after your run is over.
I won three games in 2018. My shows aired at the end of June/beginning of July, and I got the check in September. That was a bit quicker than I had been led to expect.
Some of the news stories about Amy have noted that she had used up all of her vacation time, and had to start taking unpaid leave from her job, to be on the show. That might have easily caused her some cash flow problems, and she won’t get the Jeopardy money for at least a couple of months yet.
Edited to add: It is a paper check, too, sent through the mail. None of this direct deposit stuff for Jeopardy! Very old school.
And from somewhere in the nether regions of my brain, I remembered that a guy named Stuart painted Washington’s portrait. So that was my guess on FJ, and it happened to be right.
I dredged up the name Gilbert from somewhere, but that was it.
After her faltering start, I was afraid she wouldn’t even get out of the red, but she roared back.
So, at first glance the 9200’s go all in, and 13000 bets enough to cover that (5401). This is standard Jeopardy betting.
But, for a 9200 to win, they need to get it right and 13000 needs to get it wrong. And then, if the other 9200 gets it, then he needs to win a playoff. Somewhat unlikely… I would say bet a small amount or nothing and hope for a triple stumper.
I had a feeling when I first saw the FJ category and for me that feeling was correct since I had no clue.
