Jeopardy! Season 41: Begins September 9, 2024

That actually happened & Ken ruled it as valid.

My man!

If only there’d been a non-native English speaker, we could have been treated to “how do you say, what is, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?”

I also vaguely recall a response of “what is up?”, which could have been more informally rendered as “what’s up?”

That is exactly how Matt Amodio would have responded.

There was one a few months back where the answer was so obviously “Yoda” that Ken even dropped into Yoda’s voice while reading the clue. I was completely disappointed the contestant did not answer with “Yoda who is?”

That would have been worth blowing the money.

The current champ, Scott Riccardi, got his 10th win today. He’s won $262,101. He’s one sharp dude.

I think he immediately followed a string of thirteen one day champions.

Nope, that was the guy right before him, Jason Singer. Singer won two games to break the 13-day string of one-and-done champions.

Okay, almost immediately following a string of thirteen one-day champions.

Say, why do they introduce the contestants as “originally from” wherever? I’ve been in the same place for about 25 years, but I wasn’t born here. Which one am I originally from?
I don’t “need answer fast”, as I have no plans to compete on Jeopardy!

To disguise the fact that the vast majority of contestants live in Los Angeles. They figure this will alienate viewers from around the country.

(When I auditioned during the 90s–twice, having passed the then-written test twice–I was both “from LA” AND “originally from LA.” I often wonder if that played a role in my not being invited onto the show. Well, there was also my woeful difficulties in working The Signaling Device.)

Thank you!

Now that they’ve upped the 2nd and 3rd place prizes to $2000 and $3000, it’s more practical for people living around the country to come to LA for the taping. But up until then you really had to have a LOT of disposable income lying around to defray those (substantial) costs. Which is one reason the contestants were so overwhelmingly from ‘within driving distance of the studio.’

Now that the prizes are higher, I bet that a higher percentage of people living far from LA and invited to be on the show, accept the invitations.

The Thursday game was so lopsided it wasn’t fun. Watching one person answer virtually the entire game is surprisingly annoying. Not sure what you can do about it, of course.

Watching it I had the thought that ,were I one of the contestants, I’d just take off my mic and walk out, it was that bad.

Especially when you see the other contestants frantically pressing the buzzer. Long term champions depend as much on getting the cadence of the buzzer right as they do their knowledge.

Today the champ answered “Why did the chicken cross the road?” as his full response and it made me think of this thread.

Because she wanted to lay it on the line.

Damn.

Even I knew it was “Hearst”.
