So did I. Plus Howard Hughes was alive for decades past the year mentioned.
Still Scott Riccardi had an amazing run.

That’s what gave it to me, as well. I knew Hughes lived into the 1970s.
Admittedly, so was Hearst, who didn’t die until 1951. I knew it was Hearst after the references to magazines and other publishing accoutrements; Hughes was never in the publishing business and also only owned the one film studio (RKO). Naturally, it wouldn’t have made any sense for there to be no reference to airplanes or airlines in a reference to Hughes holdings in 1935.
To be fair, the clue didn’t say that he died in 1935 though I may have gotten that impression. (“According to one obituary, in 1935 he owned 13 magazines, 8 radio stations, 2 movie companies & $56 million in real estate”)
Like it wouldn’t have made sense for there to be no reference to newspapers in a reference to Hearst? And yet there wasn’t.
I considered Hearst, but rejected him in favor of Hughes, precisely because there was no mention of newspapers.

I totally thought that clue said he died in 1935! I thought Hearst immediately, even though I thought he was alive when Citizen Kane came out in 1941, but I couldn’t think of a better answer so I stayed with him thinking maybe I was mistaken when he died.
We’d just discussed Citizen Kane before Jeopardy! ,a film my wife had not yet seen. I said “it helps to know about William Randolph Hearst.” The we get to FJ, and she’s like “It’s Hearst, isn’t it?”
Timely.
I did guess it was Hearst, mainly due to the multiple magazines (I don’t think Howard Hughes ever owned any). BUT I would also say that’s an example of a borderline-unfair wording of a clue. We wouldn’t expect the average obituary to pick a year previous to the person’s demise to provide details for.
I get that they picked 1935 because that might have been the year Hearst owned the greatest number of the properties in question. But it’s still an awkward wording.
(It’s hard to believe that Season 41 is over—it seems as though this thread was begun just a few weeks ago!)
I guess Jonathan has a wait a bit before his game 2…
Guess we will see some tournaments and reruns for a while
Brian
In today’s (Aug 7, 2025) Tournament of Champions there were two players whose first name was Drew so they went by their last names. I’ve always wondered what would happen.

Not that it matters but today’s show is a rerun from February 6, 2025. The last new episode of season 41 aired on July 25.
I knew regular episodes ended, but I now see that TOC is in the middle of the season (and not the end) I am not sure I saw that episode before – thanks for that.
Brian
Yes, I believe the pattern established in the last few seasons is to end regular play and then re-run whatever tournaments (TOC, Second Chance, etc.) they have available to show.
