Well, yeah. But I do seem to recall that Falwell made no secret of his disdain for Phelps.
I suppose we could say Jerry Falwell is still near death, he’s just near it from the other direction.
Of course, the soothsayers at CBS news are saying he’s too close to caul.
Fallwell has finally heeded Og’s calling and is now serving Him as he is best suited.

I’ve started a share your Falwell stories thread, so that any of us who might have been touched by the man, can share them. Only true stories, please. 
Thing is, Phelps is really a whole different phenomenon that Falwell. Falwell was hugely influential, he lead a giant movement with hundreds of thousands of adherants. Phelps is one crazy guy and his children and grandchildren. His church is a couple dozen people. It is a cult run by one old guy and his brainwashed adult children.
And those pickets of soldier funerals might seem crazy and pointlessly hateful. They are hateful but the hate isn’t pointless. The pickets are a method for Phelps to control his cult. The cult members holding those picket signs get yelled at, screamed at, and so on. The cult members are thereby shown that the entire sinful world hates them, the only positive contact these people have is with other cult members. Simple psychological trick, really. Of course, several of Phelps children HAVE managed to leave his cult. But almost everyone in the cult was born into the cult, and has seen nothing of the outide world except that the outside world hates them.
He’s dead; what more ill can be wished?
I’m not going to gloat, but I’m not going to shed a single tear, either. The man was a piece of shit and the world is better off without him.

At the time, he wasn’t dead or at least we didn’t know it. So he’s dead and the world may be better off as a whole. Still, there is a family that has lost a loved one and I hate to see all the rejoicing.
Actually, I’d prefer it’d be filled by those guys who dress in drag as nuns. What’s their name? Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence? Given how badly we straights have screwed things up, I say we let the queers have a shot at it.
Well, after all, Falwell did appear in (or was at least viciously satirized in) Hustler, a magazine often used as an aid to masturbation… i.e., men fondling their own penises… eh, sorry. I can’t make it make sense either.

Phelps (and by extension, I suppose, Phelps’s god) has hated Falwell since 1999, when Falwell “cut a deal with his fag preacher bud, Mel White”. He said that Falwell is a “a Hell-bound Judas”.
