Jerry Falwell on WTC

“The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.” – Proverbs 15:2

“By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” – Matthew 7:16-17

To MEBuckner’s quotes, let me add:

James 3:1
Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

James 3:2
For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

James 3:3
Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

James 3:4
Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

James 3:5
So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

James 3:6
And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

James 3:7
For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

James 3:8
But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

James 3:9
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

James 3:10
from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

James 3:11
Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

James 3:12
Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

I especially like the part about teachers being held to a stricter standard.

So the suicide terrorist hajackers were carrying out God’s will. I think Jerry thinks much like them.

New York Times, Sept. 14, 2001-- Finding Fault: U.S. Secular Groups Set Tone for Terror Attacks, Falwell Says

“Mr. Falwell said he was making a theological statement about how various groups had so offended God that the attacks could occur.”

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010914/us/attacks_robertson_falwell.html
From the AP: Robertson Defends Falwell

“On Thursday, Robertson issued a statement on the attack that said America had insulted God and lost divine protection. … Robertson…said in his statement Thursday that Americans have insulted God by allowing abortion and rampant Internet pornography.”

Wait a minute, here! Isn’t this the same jackass that said that one of the Teletubbies was gay? I find it more than a little bit odd that someone who claims to love God and the Christian religion so much has such a large shit list. He apparently hates abortionists, lesbians, gay men, feminists, large purple television characters… It seems to me that Jerry should read his Bible one more time, because it’s obvious that he must have skipped over that whole “Love your neighbor as yourself” part. Practice what you preach forcryinoutloud!!! :wally

It seems that Falwell and the Taliban are in agreement, these terrorists are instruments of God.

You know, when I heard about this at work I flew into an anti fundie rage. I hope I didn’t offend any of my friends and co-workers who happen to be non fundie christians, and I plan to appologise tomorrow.
But, FUCK how can one person be so cruel. If Falwell has any friends he’s probably lost them all. Actually I get the feeling that he doesn’t have anyone close [sub]at least since the donkey he used to fuck up the ass died.[/sub]

According to Rev. Fartsmell, er, Fallwell, God let the US be attacked because of Pagans, ‘Abortionists’ (is he talking about gynecologists or is this some new religion I haven’t heard about?), homosexuals, the ACLU and the US Supreme Court throwing God out of schools (I’ll leave aside the possibility of dislocating an omnipotent, omnipresent supreme being).

We were shielded by God from such attacks previously due to such a small minority of said groups and individuals. So, God has control of the Terrorists, but Pagans, homosexuals, The ACLU and US Supreme court have control of God? Or maybe just veto power?

Israel gets attacked by terrorists all the time. Does that mean that Israel is full of abortionists, or that there is a larger percentage of homosexuals there? They don’t have a national civil liberties union, do they? And don’t they have loads of religious colleges over there? They do have a Supreme court, don’t they? Does the Taliban have a supreme court? Maybe the terrorists are from a country without a supreme court! Jesus did say “Judge not, that you be not judged, for whatever measure you judge with, you will be judged”.

So, not only is Falwell a tasteless, intolerant ratfuck for trying to cash in on a tragedy, his logic is completely missing. Jerry, those “abortionists” are good at getting large things out through small spaces. Maybe they can get your big head out of your ass. And you might want to wash your hair after you get it out.

Personally I’m surprised. I knew Falwell and Robertson were deceitful pseudo-religious hatemongers but I thought they were clever ones.

The smart thing to do in the wake of this tragedy would have been to step out of character for a few days and pretend to be genuine Christians. Preach about unity and love and all the things they normally ignore. In an hour of crisis they would have gotten a lot of media attention and by behaving themselves they could have created an undeservedly favorable impression.

Instead, they blew this opportunity and showed their true colors. They’re promoting religious intolerance at a time when it’s just caused the death of thousands. Falwell and Robertson managed to do something I thought was impossible; they made Howard Stern look like a class act.

Look at it this way: the ACLU and People for the American Way can use these comments in their fundraising letters. As insane and offensive as the remarks are, they are also a fundraising bonanza for those groups that were unfairly attacked. Remember back in the early 80s when James Watt was Secretary of the Interior, and he made all sorts of bizarre remarks, both about the environment and other things? It was no mere coincidence that memberships in groups like the Sierra Club went through the roof during that period. There is a certain benefit to having enemies who make themselves a caricature of themselves and their group–who actually embrace the straw man argument opposite you and act as if it is a rational viewpoint.

I just heard his statements.

I think one of my favorite sayings applies to Mr. Falwell right about now:

Better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

So THAT’S how he gets his hair looking like that!

Yeah, my one consolation is Robertson and Falwell have had to have alienated even those who agree with them about the ACLU, etc., by implying God intended this.

Maybe they’ll figure out that the god Pat and Jerry whorship is a total asshole. (At which point, if they don’t want to become athiest, they could become real Christians. Hopefully somebody like Polycarp will be around to explain it to them.)

I heard Falwell frothing at the mouth, the other day, and I wanted nothing more than to wrap his head in duct tape.

First of all, let me apollogise to donkey fuckers the world over for comparing them to Falwell. Second, the more I think about it Falwell and Roberts are dangerously fucking close to treason in their statements.

So according to Bin Laden & Co., Allah did this to punish the Christian infidels, and according to Falwell & Co., Jehova did this to punish the non-Christian infidels? Am I missing something here? THEY’RE THE SAME PEOPLE!!! I’m rapidly becoming convinced that I’m not the stupidest person on the planet, and that’s scary.

I’m sorry, Judy, since I gather you know the guy, but being nice a lot of the time, and being an asshole a lot of the time, still adds up to being an asshole.

I mean, being a jerk what percentage of the time, here on the boards, would lead the admins to conclude that a poster is sufficiently a jerk that they need to be banned?

And the thing with him, and Pat, and Dobson, and the LaHayes, and all them…well, whatever you want to call them…is that it’s the same sins, over and over again. Malice toward the same people and groups. The same willingness to present falsehood as truth for the sake of what they believe. The same hypocrisy and hardness of heart.

If they seemed to be growing, learning, becoming more generous of spirit toward their chosen enemies over time (“love your enemies” – Jesus) then I could see at least some grounds for reconsideration. But they’re not. They just want to divide the world into good guys and bad guys, with them allegedly on the side of the angels, and us liberals and pagans and ACLUers and gays and whatnot, out to teach evolution to their children, and make them read their Bibles during recess rather than during a math lesson.

I’m sure Falwell can be swell to people, one on one. But I’ve seen him in person on more than one occasion, and heard him on others. He’s not without his good points, I’ll agree. But there’s so much wrong with this man that there’s no way he should be the shepherd, rather than one of the sheep. And if he was the least bit open to the truth, he would realize that, and turn his ministry over to someone with a better heart. (Not that that would sell very well in the evangelical community - as a whole, they aren’t happy without enemies to despise.) The very fact that he hasn’t done this, given his track record, is more than enough to condemn him.

Chris Jericho: “Jerry Falwell, will you please shut the hell up.”

In his apology, he said that his was a religious statement, not a legal one. Pssss, as if that distinction was going to make it any better. Damn Falwell, you want to shake hand with bin Laden too?

I think it works thusly. Everyone in America, maybe the world is a Christian, but some choose not to be good Christians. Some go so far as to be born to other religions, while most are nominally Christians, but don’t dedicate themselves to the task.

The Pentagon, the WTC, and those four flights were occupied exclusively with people who were not good Christians. (The good Christians were the ones who missed the bus or took ill the day before, or otherwise benefited from divine intervention. So Allah demanded the death of Christians, but the joke’s on him, because he only got the lazy ones, who aren’t on God’s good-boys-and-girls list. So this event is a warning: get in good with God, and he’ll whisk you out of the way while Muslims pick off the sub-par Christians. Then Jerry and Pat will whip out the Swords of Truth, and lead those who remain to glorious victory.

Capacitor, please tell me this is a real quote.

Falwell has always seemed a little weird to me. This just proves it. Maybe one of these days someone will let him know that intolerance isn’t in the Bible anywhere. Until then, hopefully someone will have the sense to keep him away from a microphone or camera.

I have seen the light! The wisdom of Falwell and Robertson has finally seeped into my previously muddled brain. It is so obvious; I don’t know why I haven’t seen it before. Hate is the true path to glorious enlightenment. No longer will I sit in darkness and fear the gays at my door. No longer will I be cursed with images of lesbians forcing me to conduct acts too abhorrent to describe. No longer will I tolerate feminist sentiments and I shall begin applying corrective action to women in my life. They must know their place.
Perhaps we should cover our women in shrouds for their own safety? Jerry, just say the word and I will get some sheets out.
ACLU? I shall hate them as you command! The Pagans too.
For the love of Christ, say the word Jerry and I shall strap myself with dynamite and walk into the closest abortion clinic.
Yes, in your wisdom you have clearly shown that only hatred and intolerance will be the key to opening heavens gate when God calls in this soul. Halleluiah!

OK, America lost divine protection due to fornication and whatnot. Damn ACLU.

But wait. What about the liability of Pat and Jerry and the fundamentalists? Their job was to keep God happy, either by getting abortion, pornography, etc. outlawed, or by devoutly praying for God’s forgiveness. It shouldn’t have been that hard - God offered to forgo destroying Sodom and Gemorrah if Lot could come up with just a handful of Godly men. Surely, Pat and Jerry could have rounded up a dozen or so people.
But, no. Pat and Jerry failed. And because they didn’t do their job, we suffered. The finger of blame should be pointed directly at them.

Quite obviously
