Perhaps you meant this to be in the pit.
She was found clutching a stuffed dolphin. Jesus Christ.
This case really shook me up because it happened about 15 miles from my parents’ home. If you’ve ever been to Citrus County, Fla., you know that it’s a pretty quiet community. The thought that this … monster, for lack of a better word, was living there largely unnoticed is terrifying.
My God. I don’t even want to imagine what went through that poor girl’s mind in her last moments. I’m not a big fan of the death penalty in general, but in this case I’ll make an exception. RIP, Jessica.
We had a similar case here in Wooster. I was trying to refresh my memory and found this horrifying account. None of this detail appeared in the local paper.
According to another article:
“Before Kristen’s abduction, Yockey had been identified as a sexually oriented offender. He lived within walking distance of the Jackson’s home, but his designation did not require community notification.”
I don’t know if notification would have made a difference. When I was 14, I thought I was invincible and might well have pooh-poohed anyone’s warning. If I was pissed off and marching home on a country road (the victim had apparently had an argument with her sister), I would have accepted a ride home with a stranger just to spite everyone.
As a parent, I cannot in a million years imagine coping with this.
I’m a Court TV junkie and I’ve seen a LOT of trials, but man, this one was just horrid. Absolutely horrid. The things he told the jail guards, the things he did to that child, the things he claims she did and said, the fact that he buried her ALIVE. What a god awful horrible act. My heart absolutely breaks for the parents.
What gets me is that Cooey is only 40-50 years old. He looks about 60-70.
I can’t imagine the guilt that the surviving sister will be coping with, for having had the argument that may, in some small way, have made Jessica more likely to get in that monster’s vehicle. What a terrible, terrible story.
No. Even for this, I’m against the death penalty. Put him in an oubliette and lower him food and water twice a day.
