There’s always a small percentage playing the “War On Christmas” for political advantages. Removing a Nativity Scene from public property is not “war.” Unless it was removed with a flame thrower.
Your level of stupid makes the baby Jesus cry.
They’re not demanding that the government call them Christian. They’re demanding that they call them “Christmas-”.
Christmas trees have no innate religious association. That doesn’t mean they have no innate Christmas association.
I concede this point Marley23. You’re right. But why does every other religion seem to get a pass around here and yet Christianity and its ilk is open season around here?
Nobody else gets a pass around here. I don’t know what you’re talking about. There is plenty of bashing of religion in general, and of other religions like Islam. Scientology is also a top target, if you consider it a religion instead of a tax scam in religious garb. If Christianity gets the most heat, it’s because it’s still largest and most pervasive religion in the U.S.
I could say “because it earns it” but that’s too easy.
It’s simply the biggest and most evangelical, which means its followers are the most vocal and throw their weight around more vigorously. Squeaky wheels draw attention.
Probably because most of us don’t deal with adherents of other religions in our day to day lives. Just a wag.
Think about it: when the hell are you going to have a reason to complain about Zoroastrians, much less an opportunity?
Christ, I didn’t even differentiate between Catholicism and Christianity correctly, let alone Presbyterianism. Too much eggnog.
Just don’t mess with my Charlie Brown Christmas special. Happy Holidays Dopers.
True, but with the amount of fervor that’s put forth you’d think some of the atheists are assaulted by Christians on their way to work on a daily basis.
Some of us are. Well, verbally.
Can you tell me why the fact that there’s such a strong reaction to this atheist billboard but these Christian billboards go by without so much as a comment each and every day means that Christianity is attacked all the time by non-believers, while non-believers are never assaulted by the pervasiveness of Christian beliefs?
This is factually incorrect. The US Constitution forbids the government from endorsing religious viewpoints, and is not obligated to recognize or say the word “Christmas” at all.
I tend to change the channel if what I’m seeing or hearing is offensive.
This is a distinction without a difference. “Christmas” is just one name for the holiday (an explicitly religious one), and it’s not even the original one. Christians are allowed to attach religious significance to the solstice if they want to, but the government doesn’t have to do it.
What do you think other religions “get a pass” on that Christianity does not?
The complete non-sequitur step is supposed to be “PROFIT!”, not “A Catholic holiday is under assault on these boards…”.
The vitriol leveled at Christianity/Catholicism on these boards is unprecedented compared to other religions, IMHO. As atheists, why not bash them all equally?
Wasn’t there a thread not too long ago where the OP suggested a mass genocide of Christians/Catholics and how the world would greatly benefit from it? I can’t remember who that poster was.
Maybe because they’re not constantly in everybody’s face (on a channel that can’t be turned off or changed) with “My way is the only way” and “I’m being persecuted because somebody criticized us.”
Unprecedented? What, have you just woken up from a 1950s cryo sleep?
When it comes to any metaphysical claims they may make, all religions get equal criticism. I have not seen much gratuitous vitriol directed at Christianity on this board (with the exception of one or two posters). What I have seen is annoyance and concern about theocratic Christians in the government and general irritation with completely made up, secular bashing media campaigns like the completely imaginary “war on Christmas.”
In addition, we don’t have evangelicals of other religions getting in our faces all the time. If Christians leave us alone, most of us are more than happy to leave them alone. Christians try to pick fights with us and codify their religion into US law. Hindus don’t.
IMO, people’s annoyance with Christianity in particular is entirely based on it’s practitioners’ ridiculous insistence on how persecuted they are.
So seriously, quit your bitching.
