Hi all… please cross your fingers for me in half an hour! I’ve got a job interview (over the phone), for a pretty cool position at Stanford Linear Accelerator.
I think I’m a good fit for the job – but they seem a bit daunted by the visa application process, so I have to convince them it’s no hassle. Which, of course, it is.
But if I get it, and if they sponsor my visa, I get to move to California, to be with MaxTheVool. Which would make it all worthwhile.
Good luck!!! Let us know how it went.

Well, the interview went really well!
It was the bit after that which wasn’t so good, when the interviewers talked to HR about the visa thing. Turn out the job wasn’t classifiable as a “specialist occupation” so they wouldn’t be able to sponsor my E-3 working visa. So I’m out of the running.
I’m really disappointed. I hope there will be a great crop of new jobs to apply for in the New Year.
That’s a pity araminty. But hopefully there will be other positions that do come within the appropriate visa classification.
Sorry to hear about the bad news. Ah, don’t get your hopes up for next year. Read a news story saying the new federal budget has quite a few deep cuts in federal science funding. Here’s a link —> http://www.qctimes.com/articles/2007/12/20/ap-state-il/d8tligk81.txt
It may not be the at the lab you applied, but anyone laid off at FermiLab is gonna be higher in the queue with other positions at other labs around the country.
It’s all part of a larger federal budget campaign to reduce science funding across the board. The money is “needed” elsewhere.
Working with a linear accelerator isn’t a specialist occupation? Who would’ve thunk it?
