I hate it, hate it, hate it. Hope that’s not what she’s going to wear all the time.
UK Braces = USA Suspenders
UK Suspenders = USA Garters
The rainbow stripe will be a thing with her outfits, I guess.
It looks like it’s the result of the BBC telling the costume department “make it easy to cosplay.”
I actually like the general idea, but the execution is off somehow. It may be the bagginess of the pants. I’m not sure. Whatever it is, there’s something about it that I think looks unfinished. I did not notice this on any of the other Doctors, even the other ones who were dressed in ridiculous ways.
It does at least make her look a bit older, though, which I think is good. I’m not saying you can’t have a Doctor who looks like a younger woman, but that wasn’t what it seemed they were going for. The high pants do very much give her a “mom” look.
Horrible ,Horrible, Horrible. That the outfit of an annoying comic sidekick who everybody hopes gets killed off, not a lead.
I’ve been wondering about how they would dress the first woman Doctor since she was cast. Would they go feminine, masculine, or somewhere in between? Any would make sense, but would have arguments against. This looks like they were equally as uncertain and threw a lot of options into the ring.
I’ve grown to like it, but as many others have said, it’s the shapeless culottes that are the least appealing. I figure in motion we won’t care, and the costume will evolve over time too. No big deal at this stage.
What I do think was the influence is early 80s fashion, which makes me think that, just like Moffatt tended to fold in a lot of the very early years of Doctor Who back into the series, Chibnall will do the same with the 80s era stories. We may see characters from those times reappear or otherwise be referenced.
I’m just glad her braces are proper grown-up button-on braces. Clips are for kids, not adults.
I read somewhere that her outfit is in homage to previous Doctors: Overcoat is a nod to 10; Mork-From-Ork stripe, the scarf; boots, I don’t remember ATM.
Brits aren’t going to equate Mork-From-Ork with the strpe – that’s explicity homage to the scarf.
I don’t like the culottes either. I didn’t like them when I was young. Very few females can pull off the look. I’d rather see 13 wearing regular pants.
OTOH it’s a very simple outfit for cosplay, so simple that almost anybody could pull it off. I have yet to see an actual Doctor at any of the cons I’ve been to.
OK, so I’m the last person in the world to say, or care, anything about fashion, but c’mon, those pants? They look like normal pants that have just been stuck on too high on a dress-up paper figure. Just move 'em like 10cm down, then adjust the cut, and the color.
I guess a halter top and Daisy dukes are out.
That’s a different show. Perhaps a burka? Nah, that’s too restrictive to run in.
Jodie looks fine. A bit boring compared to Matt Smith colorful outfit.
The costume will work ok for filming…
It’s like an asexual Tom Baker going to a Dark Side of the Moon party.
p.s. I’ve seen her at a local sports centre and she looks a lot sexier as a mum with two kids. Might be the point.
I thought Idris Elba was going to get this. Hang on …
I keep reading the thread title as Johnny Whittaker’s Doctor Who outfit.
Yeah, I can’t get past that yet either. Especially since his most famous role was Jodie. ![]()
It amazes me that people claiming to be Doctor who fans are complaining that the latest doctor’s pants are ill-fitting. Two, Four, Five, Six, Ten, and Eleven all had pants that were either the wrong size or otherwise widely off in some way. Complaining that the first female doctor is keeping the traditional fashion sense that only three and nine (maybe eight) rebelled against seems a little odd. The coat is kind of plain, but not really any worse than Nine’s basic leather jacket, and I suspect she will change her coat unlike prettty much everyone but Nine.
I like it reasonably well. I don’t love it, but it seems like it’s certainly in the ballpark.
The shirt looks a bit cheap and I’m worried that the horizontal stripe, when we see her moving, is just going to look like a narrow, awkwardly placed boob strap, but maybe not. Otherwise, seems decent.
As I said elsewhere, if at least once, under her breath while she’s attempting to repair something, she says “shazbot!”, my life will be complete. ![]()
The truth is, it looks stupid. More importantly, I won’t care if the show is well written again. If the new show-runner can make the show as good as it was mid-Tenant or so, I’ll be happy and the costume will be irrelevant.
Is Mork even a reference most non-US Who fans are going to get? I mean, I know who that is, but I’ve never seen the show.
Me, I could give a toss what the Doctor wears, as long as the show’s passable.
