I doubt that the length of a thread has any bearing on server load. It appears that you get served one page at a time no matter how long the thread.

I’ve seen a thread hit 41 pages on a different board. Would that even be possible here?
Based on an earlier Pit thread, I can honestly say that if the server is slow, it’s because you’ve obviously gotten a reputation as a lousy tipper.

Under previous versions of this software, a thread hitting five pages would make the board slow down. We’re still not positive why- the general thought is that for some reason accessing one page of the thread pulled out information from all pages of the thread.
But really, we don’t know why it sucked so much in that version; all we do know is that we’d have a day with some serious time-outages, and when we closed off a thread that had hit page 5, the board mysteriously sped up. Thus, like baseball players who refuse to change their socks, we decided to start closing 5-page threads because, well, it didn’t really hurt anything, and we had no idea why, but it seemed to be keeping us up and running at a time when our hamsters were fragile and tended to explode without notice.
I admit some fanatacism regarding closing down long threads in that period, given that I was “the new mod” and therefore cleaning up the remains of said exploded hamsters was therefore my job. Since the arrival of others lower than I in the pecking order, I have become far more lax about the entire thing. That, and it no longer seems to be a big server problem under the new software.
It still is a bit of a hassle, though- you can only jump to one of the first five pages from the main forum page, so getting to, say, page 7 of an 11 page thread can be annoying, especially on slow days. So I still have some impetus to close down a thread once it starts to move past page 5.

While other mods reveled vaingloriously in their negative press, or sat stunned and goggle eyed at the deadly pileup caused by a huge woman sperm slick, only John Corrado had the cojones to unstrap the big iron from his thigh and do what had to be done to the bloated, gibbering, flatulent beast the thread had become.
