John Mulaney is Back?

A quote from Left_Hand_of_Dorkness

“John Mulaney is my favorite comedian, now that Louis CK is hot garbage (please, Mulaney, please don’t be hot garbage). I love his standup.”

I agree with that statement except I don’t like Louis CK. I like John because he is hysterically funny and seems like a pretty decent guy, who is also fighting some demons.

So his going into rehab recently was no doubt the right thing to do, especially after watching his last performance on Seth Meyers (the one with the sunglasses and army jacket where he seemed high). I have been waiting for news of his return.

Then I read last week that he is back performing and is divorcing his wife of 6 years - that the divorce was his idea, and his wife was blindsided by the news. That seems crappy of him to me as I can believe he was probably not the most fun person to live with (demons), and she was standing by him.

Today I read that he is already dating Olivia Munn which means he must not just be in a fog of depression, and I would think this information would make things much harder on his current wife.

So please, John, don’t turn into hot garbage.

I’m just feeling sorry for Olivia Munn now.

Sorry to hear all that has been happening. It could be entertaining if he included his rehab and divorce decision in some new standup, he has a great way of telling stories.

Saw him live during his last tour. One of my favorite stand-up comics. Shame to see him unravelling.

If anybody hasn’t yet heard his story of when he and a friend were kids and punched up Tom Jones’ “What’s up Pussycat” like 27 times on a restaurant jukebox, you have to look it up. Hysterical. And I’m not even a huge fan of his, but that story, and the way he tells it, is great.

I also enjoyed him playing a more douchey version of himself on Pete Holme’s HBO show ‘Crashing’. (Though reading this thread, maybe the douchiness wasn’t all that exaggerated).

Yes, love that bit. His Delta Airlines and “the one thing you can’t replace” stories are amazing too.

Let’s also not forget, he came up with the perfect analogy for the Trump administration: “Imagine there’s a horse loose in a hospital…”

I just hope the guy is doing okay with his addiction issues. I can’t speak to the end of his marriage; I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about that going forward.

Well, there is a possibility that he felt his wife was enabling his addictions, and he realized he needed a change - divorce, rehab, etc. We just don’t know his motivations.

I’m a big fan and I support his recovery. I tend to think people should be able to leave marriages for any reason but it’s probably also true that people with mental health and addiction issues make impulsive decisions. This could be either kind of decision, really.

Since Louis CK has been brought up, I think jerking off in front of women without their consent and then willfully rejecting any kind of accountability is orders of magnitude worse than leaving your wife, for whatever reason. I try not to judge the marriages of even my friends and family, so I’d be hesitant to judge a celebrity as well.

Though I have to say, I hope she told him, “Beat it, Bozo!”

I wonder who gets Petunia in the divorce.

Now that made me sad.

It’s the children that suffer most.

I initially read the thread title “Black” instead of “Back”, I’m guessing because the b is capitalized.

So I did an image search, because I’ve seen the guy and he’s real white.

I’m so glad I didn’t reply without reading.

I thought that until this very post.

Why feel sorry for her? She lucked into a well paying career that she has no talent at whatsoever. She should be sacrificing a bullock to Crom every single day of her life in thanks.

Or his wife was trying to keep him off drugs and he doesn’t want to stop, rehab or no. Does his wife have a drug problem? Why blame her? Drug addicts don’t make good decisions at the best of times. One of the things he should have learned in rehab is to not make major decisions in his life right now.

I opened this thread because I couldn’t believe he’s actually black. When I realized my mistake, I was too embarrassed to say anything, so it’s nice to hear it’s not just me. It’s like that horizontal butthole thread.

As for the actual topic, I enjoy his comedy and I’ve seen nothing so far that indicates hot garbage. Relationships are impossible to judge from the outside. Absent some information that is much worse than “he divorced his wife and is now dating someone else,” I’ll not judge too harshly.

Perhaps it’s selfish, but I’m hoping he’ll be back on SNL next season. His appearances have been fun, with good musical sketches.

Nothing new to add, but I also like his comedy, am sad about his addiction, and that Olivia Munn has no discernable talent.

Mulaney’s funniest bit is his Law and Order commentary, specifically when he talks about a proposed movie where two misfits recieve Jerry Orbach’s donated eyes and fall in love. (These would be worth a google.)

I don’t know much about his personal life or addictions. Hopefully he gets better and continues to be funny.

I saw Mulaney live in 2018, when he was doing bits that would eventually become kid gorgeous in radio city.

On stage he did this hilarious bit about what a piece of shit Grandpa Joe from willy Wonka was. “You asshole, you’ve been able to walk this whole time? We’ve been starving and you’ve just been laying in bed?”

I have no idea whats happening with him, I thought I heard he told his wife he wanted a divorce 3 months ago, but still. Him dating Munn so quickly after has got to be hard for his wife who stuck by him during his addictions. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors though.
