John Prine in critical condition [EDIT: RIP]

I guess it’s too late to write to Dear Abby and ask her advice. :frowning:

My wife and I listened to his first two albums last night as we made dinner. We’re going to continue through his catalog. His songs are more meaningful and personal than most and this makes me very sad. :frowning:

Today the reports are that his condition has improved somewhat, and he’s apparently now stable, although still on a ventilator.

I had a feeling you were a fan.

I got in the car this morning and Outlaw Country (sattelite radio) was playing Mr. Prine’s “When I Get To Hevean” and I thought “Oh Fuck”. There was no folloow up announcement, and I spent all day wondering. Good to hear of the improvement!
While I’m here, Here’s the song:

I am a long-time fan too, but I hope you all aren’t overlooking his most recent album, **The Tree of Forgiveness.
**

I hope to hell he pulls through.
mmm

Local news says he’s doing much better. Upgraded to stable from critical.

StG

He ain’t got laid in a month of Sundays
Caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies
He ain’t too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it’s oxygen
He’s my baby, I’m his honey
I’m never gonna let him go

When I get to Heaven
I’m gonna shake God’s hand
Thank him for more blessings
Than one man can stand
Then I’m gonna get a guitar
And start a rock and roll band
Check into a swell hotel
Ain’t the afterlife grand!

And then I’m gonna get a cocktail
Vodka and Ginger Ale
Yeah, I’m gonna smoke a cigarette
That’s nine miles long
I’m gonna kiss that pretty girl
On the Tilt a Whirl
'Cause this old man is going to town

Shit, beat cancer twice and now this?

Sam Stone.

He sings what we struggle to say.

from "Take the Star Out of the Window:

In spite of ourselves
We’ll end up a’sittin’ on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we’re the big door prize
We’re gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won’t be nothin’ but big old hearts
Dancin’ in our eyes.

Nm, ninja’d.

It’s ok, needscoffee, it bears repeating.

My favorite is Paradise.

“Then the coal company came with the world’s largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.”

Assholes.

Here is a nice tribute from Joan Baez. And, keep clicking to see some Prine videos.

Kacey Musgraves wrote Burn One With John Prine. It’s based on a real encounter. They met before she became a big star.

She shared the stage with John and it’s obvious their good friends. She sang Burn One With John Prine and he was delighted. It appeals to his sense of humor

John is quite a character. He’s never changed.

Latest update from John’s wife - https://twitter.com/FionaPrine/status/1245911205249761282

This is John’s 8th day in ICU . He is receiving excellent medical care and being treated with kindness and compassion by the entire team looking after him day and night. I cannot be with him which makes this nightmare all the more distressing…

…As you know, John was put on a ventilator last Saturday. He still needs quite a bit of help with his breathing. Like many patients currently in ICU beds all around the world, John has pneumonia in both lungs. He has also developed some peripheral issues that are being treated

with meds, including antibiotics. He is very ill and yet I remain hopeful that he can continue to fight this devastating virus and come home where we can care for him. I don’t have the words to adequately Thank You all for the outpouring of love and prayers that John

and our family have received this last week. Please continue to send Love, Prayers and Positive Energy to John. He needs us now more than ever. John loves you and I love you too.

That is not a hopeful update.
