Jon Stewart August 04, 2005

Speak for yourself. I plan to sin quite a bit this weekend.

It would, of course, be a judgement call on the part of the mods whether this thread (or its topic) is more properly suited to CS, or GD or the Pit. I’m not the boss of you, Lib, and it would never occur to me to tell you what to do; but when I think that question should be addressed for any particular thread, I simply report the OP to the mods, raise my concerns, and ask them to adjudicate. As often as not, I do this without myself contributing to the thread in question.

Isn’t Cooter a Democrat?

Wellll Excoooose Me!!
I am not a democrat. I am not leftwing. I am a moderate republican. I laughed my butt off within a few minutes of the show and started a thread. I have never, ever started a Jon Stewart thread before.
It was funny, very funny episode. Why would you basically pit me in the Cafe?
What did I do? I laughed at a comedy program. Yes, Jon is an admitted Dem, doesn’t make all his fans the same. I also use to love the HBO Dennis Miller show and I’ve heard him accused of being a right wing mouth piece.
So to answer your question, the purpose was to appreciate the show.

It was not an accident that I used question marks. I’m asking for the consensus here. I gave my opinion, yes, but I asked for yours as well. I haven’t told anyone what to do. It just seems like these Jon Stewart threads pop up like Jack Chick threads in the Pit. Why not do the Jack Chick threads here as well? It’s art, right?

Like jrfranchi, I am a moderate Republican.

There are about three more of us in America.

I liked the episode.

Really, there are 5 of us left. The only politician I know of still in office is McCain.

Hagel ain’t so bad…

I do, at least in theory. Given the political makeup of the board, though, I have no doubt that it would eventually degenerate into something that would have to be moved to the pit. But if it stayed civil and on-topic, then I’d say it should stay in CS.

Your Chick example, I think, is a little different in that those threads are created as pittings of the material being discussed. There’s a current pit thread doing the same thing to Lifetime Network movies. However, if someone wanted to actually discuss Chick tracts as a medium/art form/social commentary, (like this site did) then it would probably be more appropriate in CS than in the pit.

All in my non-mod opinion, of course.

JFTR, I wasn’t trying to imply that you had told anyone what to do. My wording was an attempt to emphasize that by detailing my own procedure, I was offering a suggestion, not anything as strong as a demand, or even a request.

With respect, Lib, asking for consensus on whether a thread is degenerating into a forum-inappropriate tone (or even whether the thread’s raison d’etre is crypto-inappropriate, if you’ll allow me the neologism) strikes me as an invitation to engage in introspection and navel-gazing. There’s a time and a place for such exercises, of course, and even for invitations to such exercises. I’m not convinced that this thread is the time or the place for either. In fact, my opinion is that it isn’t.

Of course, if you object to my characterization of your “asking for consensus”, I won’t resent your rejection of my analysis. Nor will I pursue the issue. I feel that to do so would unnecessarily hijack the thread into being “about Liberal,” and I think we get enough of those as it is.

Peace. And please give my warmest regards to Edlyn.

The digs on NASA and the news media’s coverage of Flight 358 were also very partisan…

It’s true that last night’s show didn’t contain any digs at Democrats. There really wasn’t that much about Republicans per se, though. Novak has been in Stewart’s crosshairs for ages. Ditto Bill O’Reilly, who really hung himself with his own words. All Jon had to do with that quote was sit there and let everyone laugh at the absurdity. I enjoyed the joke about “children with only a passing acquiantance with the rules of logic,” though.

Jon Stewart’s funny.
Liberal… not so much.

I believe that he has claimed to be liberal, although he doesn’t seem to be liberal on the economic side.

Heck, you operate by your own definition of the word. Why not him?
In any case, enough about you. I hadn’t previously seen the Jessica Simpson video. I’d tap that myself.

And frankly, I hadn’t previously noticed how tight the jeans were on the Duke boys, but then I was a heterosexual male and ten years old.

Upon seeing the title of this thread, did anyone else think that Jon Stewart died yesterday? Whew, I’m glad this was just a discussion of the latest show.

O’Reilly is not a Republican. He said so. Nevermind the voter registration.

I know. I thought it was hilarious how they set this up, putting it in such close proximity to the joke about how because John McCain was tortured personally, he therefore had to know more about the general efficacy of torture than anyone who was not tortured personally.

Thank god John Stewart is around to show how stupid these guys are.

Hmmm … liberal on the noneconomic side, nonliberal on the economic side …

Doesn’t that kinda sound like the Libertarian party platform?

Stewart’s Daily Show material is not anti-right-wing so much as it is anti-idiot and anti-bullshit.

Why the bulk of his targets appear to be right-wingers is an exercise left for the reader.

You know it finally dawned on me that Liberal won. He took a nice little, Gee that was funny thread and turned it political. I guess this should now move.
