Start a thread about Piss Christ, by all means. It’s a gorgeous piece of art, IMO, and not offensive at all, just grossly misunderstood.
I wouldn’t have any problem with a thread like this (in CS)–I most likely wouldn’t open it, because I loathe Limbaugh. And if I did go in and piss all over it by calling the posters rightwing morons peacocking their intolerance and bigotry*–I deserve to be Pitted for my hijack.
If I make a pattern of such behavior, I deserve to be banned.
*yes, I know these were not your exact words. I am not interested enough in your exact words to bother to find them and quote them. I trust you get the gist of my message–I refuse to nitpick on actual verbiage.
And PS–I’d love to see Rush TRY to rip Hillary a new one. As if.
I agree completely. And I’m sick and tired of the tendency of the Christian right to sneer at art and to see it in the most hostile light possible.
For those who don’t know, Andres Serrano was a Catholic, and as I recall, Piss Christ was not intended to be anti religious, but instead was a commentary on how the modern church had moved away from the true ideals of Christianity.
Not that nuances like that matter to some of the closed minds on the religious right…
So what did Poop Muhommed mean?
Yeah, I hear the NAACP guy who got whoosed during the Dukes of Hazzard segment is on Rove’s short list for new GOP Management Right-Hand-Man.
I was being flippant in my previous post, in response to what I thought was a silly hijack. I do think that far more BS is coming from the right these days, not just because I disagree with them, but because they’re so firmly in power that they can get away with it.
I thought Stewart did a great job interviewing Rick Santorum a couple of weeks ago. While Stewart clearly disagreed with Santorum on the points they were discussing, Stewart did what no one in a similar position on television tries to do these days–he tried to find common ground. He kept pushing to find something that he and Santorum could agree on. It seemed like it was out of Santorum’s comfort zone, which is understandable since his political success has come in an era in which debate is nothing more than shouting talking points at one another, and consensus is only the product of backroom deals. Still, it was refreshing.
Stewart’s famous “Crossfire” appearance (in which he became my hero) was hammering on this very point–shows like that one are one place where we could try to find some consensus, but they don’t even act like they’re trying to do that. (Stewart didn’t direct that rant at anyone in particular; he ended up going after Tucker Carlson pretty hard, but only because he took the bait.)
I don’t think that it’s any secret, or any surprise, that Stewart’s politics are left-wing, but I can’t see the justification for calling him a “hack”. He’s one of the few non-hacks in the current political universe.
What, pray tell, is “the opposing view” that you falsely claim (by implication) to represent? You didn’t drop by to offer the opinion that John McCain is a pussy when it comes to torture, or that Robert Novack is a persecuted hero for exposing the traitorous former ambassador from Ghana. Nope, your only contribution to the thread was to play junior mod at the rest of us for daring to publicly enjoy a show that you don’t like.
And by the way, did you even watch the Aug. 4 episode of The Daily Show? Or are you just being a holier-than-thou contrarian for the sake of being a holier-than-thou contrarian?
Okay.
So I opened this thread and was confused as to why it was in GD and not Cafe Society. Seemed like no debate. Then I read when it was moved. And I read a little more. And to be an annoying mod-wannabe (I’m no Junior anything!) shouldn’t this really be in the Pit by now? There’s no debate here; just people p.o.'d at Lib sidetracking another thread like one of those witnessers who try to turn every thread into a Christ is great fest. C’mon folks, either pit the dude or ignore him. I mean there is some entertainment in reading the wreckage here, but really!
If you live in the Netherlands, likely that you will be shot to death in the street.
Those are pretty much my thoughts as well. I only read GD and occasionally GQ. Why is this thread discussing a TV show (which I like, but still) in GD? What’s the debate? Is GQ going to devolve into meta-debating SDMB policies?
Put it back in CS, send it to the Pit, whatever… I just don’t like having to read through a thread looking for where it became a debate and thus got moved, only to find that it never did.
