Ok, what do you guys think of John Schneider’s protrayal of Jonathan Kent on Smallville. Now not having read more than 2-3 Superman comics, I’m not sure what to think. But with the plethora of other Superman shows (the movies, Lois&Clark, etc), I’ve always had the impression that Jonathan’s personality was much more laid back and accepting.
The protrayal of Jonathan in Smallville seems to me to be overbearing and controlling. He rarely consults with Martha in decision making. And he holds a grudge seemingly forever (Luthors and Martha’s father). I’m afraid that his distrustful nature of the Luthors may be the very thing that seals the fate of Lex’s eventual turn to the darkside.
Anyways, is this how he is protrayed in the comics? Was my vision of cute and cuddley Jonathan really this far off from the real Jonathan?
No, I don’t think the Smallville Jonathan is much like the comic Jonathan, but then, neither are the Clarks alike, or Lanas or any of the other characters. It’s just a different take on the character.
From what I remember, I thought Jonathon Kent was supposed to be the strong silent type. I also thought the Kents were much older in the comics.
The more I see of Pa Kent on Smallville, the less I like him. He is suspicious of everyone and everything, is constantly questioning people’s motives and holds grudges way longer than he should. (IMHO) On the other hand, I can understand why he does some of the things he does, but that doesn’t mean I have to like him.
It cracked me up in one of the episodes last season when he was driving around the farm in his pickup truck and he was singing along to Waylon Jennings’ “Just two good ol’ boys…” on the radio.
