In Iowa Joni Ernst won the Republican primary. She wants to abolish the Department of Education and the EPA. Iowa is a fairly centrist state and it hard to see how these positions could result in her winning the general election.
In Mississippi the race between six term Senator Thad Cochran and Tea Party favorite Chris McDaniel is still too close to call.
With about 98 percent of the votes counted, McDaniel had 49.6 percent and Cochran 48.8 percent - a difference of about 2,500 votes. However a third candidate has 1.6% of the vote and the winner needs 50% of the vote so it is pretty certain that there will be a runoff in 3 weeks.
