I have to agree with Groucho here. Some people simply post in a somewhat abrasive manner. Calling that “junior modding” is just ridiculous.
Asking for a better source is one thing; demanding that someone not cite from one source is quite another. The latter was indeed IMO coming across as junior modding.

Yup. There’s a difference between a request for a reputable cite and a demand.
But how can it be junior modding? Would a moderator ever tell you you couldn’t use some source? That seems outside their scope.
I think the idea is that “Don’t post X” is the junior modding. A mod can tell you not to post this, that, or the other thing (“Don’t start any more threads on this subject”, for example)… other posters do not have the authority to do so.
“Don’t link to the Daily Mail.” => definitely junior modding.
“Don’t link to the Daily Mail as if it were a reputable news source.” => not junior modding at all. The added clause makes all the difference, making it clear that this isn’t an instruction on what to cite, but on the trustworthiness of the reference.
Last I checked, people with modding authority have Moderator as a title. If someone is too stupid to notice if a poster is actually a moderator or not, they deserve whatever they get.
Don’t put words in my mouth <- Junior modding?
Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining <- Junior modding?
Don’t quote me boy I ain’t said shit <- Junior rapping?
I agree with the OP, posters make “demands” of other posters all the time, this didn’t strike me as something that came across as a rules violation.
I mean, I know it’s just a note and therefore no big deal, but I gotta agree: this doesn’t look at all like junior modding to me. I wonder if it got reported by someone feeling snippy, and Loach read it and responded real quick.
It’s a slow day at the Dope. Mods get antsy.

I mean, I know it’s just a note and therefore no big deal…
This is a terrible attitude. We can (and will) make big deals out of anything.
FWIW, the test I apply is this: If I were a newb reading this, would I think I was never allowed to do “X” on the SDMB? If so, it’s Junior Modding.
And yes, in this case, t’were I new to the Dope, I might mistake the post as an authoritative statement that nothing from the Daily Mail should be cited as if it were reliable. I’d be searching around for the guidelines on what types of publications COULD be used as citations here.

Well, nothing from Daily Fail should be cited as if it were reliable. But seriously, you might think that were an official rule, based on that post? I find that difficult to believe.

Yeah! How come there’s no like button for this??!?!?
Serious question for a moderator (probably Loach would be the best choice here): Would it avoid the appearance of Junior Modding if the poster precedes the imperative with “PROTIP:”?
(My personal opinion on the matter is that any imperative sentence on the subject of posting directed by one poster to another may come off as Junior Modding. Eye of the beholder and all that, and keeping in mind that each Mod is a distinct beholder).

Well I posted “This comes across like junior modding.” I didn’t post “This is junior modding.” I try to use specific words while modderating. In a case where someone is posting a link to the Daily Mail as if it were a credible source it can come across as being junior modding to say don’t use the Daily Mail as if it were a credible source. It was a note not a warning and a pretty gentle one at that.
The same exact point could be made without any hint of it sounding like an order.
What if DrF had said “please”?
I’m off to see Thor. Discuss amongst yourselves.

Yeah! How come there’s no like button for this??!?!?
Don’t ask for a like button like it’s a reasonable request.
I would say “not junior mod’ing” if it were me, mainly because it could lead to some other, questionable calls:
Don’t tell me what I should want.
Don’t tell me whom I should vote for.
Don’t keep posting the same thing and think I’m going to respond differently.
But I guess the take-away is “don’t start sentences with ‘don’t’ if you don’t want to get a mod note.”

I’m off to see Thor. Discuss amongst yourselves.
Ask him to go light on the thunder next time he sends a storm to Anaheim. Our dog kinda freaks out when it gets too loud.
ETA: Do the mods get a pass into Asgard with their coffee mugs? Could the SDMB make extra money selling those?
