I wonder… Is it ever possible for a name-calling on GD to be an insult based SOLELY on poster context? If someone with Der Trih’s history and public opinions called someone a “theist” or a “Christian,” could that be considered a personal insult?

It would be nice if there were any mods left that had the sack to call jerks for what they are and start banning the assholes that degrade the discourse. Unfortunately, we’ve long since lost any sense of courage among the mods; whether it’s because of P2P, whether you’re afraid of getting pitted, or whether (most likely) it’s just easier to let things slide than put yourself out there by making judgement calls, I don’t know. But the fact is that you guys are trigger-shy about any jerkitude that doesn’t fall outside veeery specific criteria.
If you guys don’t have the courage to take some hits for standing up to the assholes, quit.

I actually think the Mods by and large do a hell of a (mostly thankless) job in general. If they came down on every snarky remark…well, we’d all end up getting banned most like. 
Czarcasm asked why I didn’t press the bad post button and I gave the answer…I didn’t do so because having done so in the past and not getting any response I assumed (correctly it turns out) that calling someone an apologist isn’t considered an insult. While I disagree with that assessment I agree that it’s not a serious transgression either…certainly not something I want to see even the likes of Der banned for.
As for Der Trihs it’s funny…if he stayed out of political and religious threads and just hung out in CS or the new Game Room he would probably be one of the more popular 'dopers on the board. He really ISN’T just a one dimensional idiot…except when it has to do with the US, Bush and religion (especially Christian/Catholic but not limited to those). C’est la vie I guess…

Ok, now I’m parting company. Der is a burbling teakettle and a pinhead besides. And it’s easy to respond to a low caliber characterization like “Apologist”.
If there’s a brief characterization of your position, you can simply state it in response. And, if your adversary is Der, toss him a few curve balls. It’s not exactly difficult to flummox the guy.
Then again, I should acknowledge XT’s last post – he isn’t exactly gunning for Der’s expulsion.
You know, as much as I detest Der Trihs, I do believe he believes what he says and is posting honestly from his point of view. I’d really hate to see this place start being moderated so as to ban people who are unpopular or who otherwise ‘degrade the discourse’ (no offense intended, furt). That could be a big time slippery slope and might well lead to all sorts of bannings that would currently be considered unjustified.
I truly despise much of what Der Trihs says and what he appears to stand for. He’s a putz of the first order. But we all have to tolerate behavior we abhor in others in order to have a free society. If we start banning people just because they’re disliked or because they impede the flow of the conversation, this will become a pretty oppressive and uninteresting place.
I don’t want him banned either. He often makes the best arguments for our side.
