Just Bare chicken ad

Correct, i am not a paying member, but I have been around a while…

I don’t typically mind or even notice the ads but the “Just Bare chicken” ad takes control of the scrolling and keeps zipping me back up to the top of any thread it is in…it will not allow me to read thread because it keeps scrolling upwards…

I use safari and have never experienced this before now.

Thanks for letting us know. I’ve forwarded the info to our admins.

In the meantime, if you still can’t read the thread and you want to, go into your browser’s settings and disable JavaScript.

The SDMB site still works just fine (mostly), and ads are totally disabled.

When you’re through, you can turn JS back on. Or just leave it off, if you like that better.

(Myself, I keep JS disabled all the time except for a few specific sites where I know that I need it. Commercial sites, like for paying my credit card bill and my utility bill, are the sorts of sites where you most likely need JS and can’t do without it.)

Adblocker. Use it, love it.

Adblock. Use it, love it (until all free content on the web is killed off.)

If anything will be killed off by ad blockers, it isn’t the free content, but the paid stuff.

Sites like the SDMB fall under the paid stuff category. Right now, we bring in enough money from subscriptions and ad revenue to keep us afloat. If we don’t bring in enough money from ads and subscriptions, then there’s no reason for the company that owns us to keep us going.

Sorry you’re having problems. Questions:

  1. What exactly happens? The page loads, you begin reading the thread and scrolling down, and then what?

  2. Where does the “Just Bare Chicken” ad appear on the page when this problem occurs? We have a squarish ad spot near the top of SDMB pages, and a tall skinny one at the bottom. Which space does the ad appear in?

  3. What leads you to think the JBC ad is at fault, and not some other ad or cause?

  4. How many times has this problem occurred? Does it occur every single time the JBC ad appears?

  5. Does the problem ever occur when the JBC ad is NOT present on the page?

  6. Are there any unusual aspects of your system or method of operation that might have a bearing on this issue?

I’d also be interested in hearing from any users who have experienced a similar problem - that is, uncontrolled scrolling to the top of the page.

Thanks for your help. -Ed

Ed has been nice enough to say he would look into it. But how about meeting him halfway and verifying that it isn’t your computer that is the culprit? Malware is pretty invasive these days, is known to cause problems as you describe, and if you are the only person experiencing this, it might not be the Dope’s fault.

When the add is on the page, it has been right after the OP and a few time at the bottom, my browsers scrolls to where the add is…if i navigate back to where i want to read the ad takes over and rescrubs back to where it is…
it has occurred every time i encounter the Just Bare Chicken ad, no other ads have ever done this to my browser, i use Safari 9.1.1
My laptop is a late 2009 unibody MacBook running Yosemite 10.10.5 I use it almost exclusively for internet surfing and a small amount of streaming.

(edited to add) i just got on for today and will look to see if it happens again…I will only be on a bit until after my second work shift.

hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. Has anyone else had this issue? Usually if the problem is on our end we get multiple reports.

Adblocking software has been around for over a decade, if it was going to kill anything off, it already would have.

I had a similar problem (getting scrolled to the bottom of the page vs. the top) in Safari for iOS - http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=794808

I’m having this problem, too, only on Android, Lollipop 5.0.1. It is very annoying.

Do you experience this only when the Just Bare Chicken ad is present on the page, as reported by ThisSpaceForRent?

No, I mainly saw T-Mobile ads on the page. Or at least I did until I installed an ad blocking browser on my phone and eliminated the problem.
