What's with the jumpy adds

On SDMB? I go to a page and can’t scroll until the add is done playing. Even when its done, it repeats and I STILL can’t scroll unless I get out of the page and return.

Make that two.

Same here. Autoplay is annoying, autoscrolling away from the part of the page I want to read is intolerable.

I got one too, a minute ago.

'Made me close the tab. And that’s one advertiser who’s not getting any business from me.

I hate those things.

For a mere $14.95 per year, you can avoid seeing those ads. Just sayin’.

That’s 4 cents per day.

Or Adblock. It’s free and it blocks ads on ALL websites. Not just this one.

If you are using Firefox, try this.

Choose a spot somewhere on this page where there is no text and no link and right click on it.

Click on “View Page Info.”

Along the top of the page, click on “Permissions.”

In the menu that comes up, locate “Adobe Flash” and click on the circle next to “Always Ask.”

I learned this trick during the month-long BMO Harris Bank reign of terror.

If you are using Chrome: Why?

But then we’d miss out on “Rarely Seen Historical Photos From The Past That Will Leave You Speechless!”

I have adblocker and it still shows up. And I don’t mind ads, I just don’t like when they take control of my computer. If SD decides to go this way, then I guess all their other sponsors will lose exposure as well because I’ll just leave. Not worth the frustration.

But is it worth $.04/day? Seriously.

This is a distraction–a way to waste time. If you look, I’ve been on this board for a very long time, but have less than 500 posts. I won’t be bullied by ads into paying for this. $15 bucks is nothing really, but if they resort to this kind of thing to get it, I guess their other ad sources can do without views as well

Bullied? “If THEY resort to this kind of thing”?

Who are THEY and what “kind of thing”?

I’m a user, not a mod or an owner. I was asking a simple question. People are complaining about the ads. For a very small amount of change, you can make the ads go away. Just curious.

I just retired from 40 years of development/fund raising work. We used to have a saying, when we would put on a big event or put out a publication: “Doing what people think just happens.”

Things don’t just happen. There are people behind the scenes *making *it happen and *paying *for it. Just sayin’.

No one is bullying you. In fact, I’m quite amused that you see it that way.

You forgot “Number 12 is PRICELESS!!!”

That ad is super annoying and guaranteed to drive any new traffic away.

I often browse SD without being logged in and don’t use Adblocker.

Never have I had an ad take control of my screen.

I no longer link to this place, at least without warning people that they should use adblockers. Yeah, you may consider this place worth paying for, but do you really think you’d want to venture onto a new website that says, “well, if you don’t want to suffer from sketchy ads, you can always get a subscription!” I’m not going to stick around long enough to check it out.

You’re talking about those of us who were here before these ads. The new people, not so much.

I’m experiencing the same issue. It renders the entire site unusable and no, I will not buy a John Deere tractor.

This is very much worth repeating. If I were following a google search result or linked here otherwise and my first experience here was the John Deere ad or similar, I would write this entire site off as dead to me, forever.

I don’t use an ad blocker because I respect the rights of content providers to generate revenue from their content, within reason. This browser hijacking ad isn’t reasonable under any definition of the word and the fact that it’s still being fed does not speak well of the management of this site. And it is still being fed, over 24 hours later.
