Here’s the situation. I move back to the dorms on Sunday, and must leave Saturday sometime to get there (my family lives in Minnesota, I live in Missouri). Until today, my mom was all for leaving Saturday morning and getting a hotel room, then staying the night and moving me in at the 9 AM approved time. Goodie.
So today, the manual transmission on my 1990 truck goes out in the middle of the rural highway after having an oil change, 4 new tires put on, and its duct-taped mud flap being bolted back in (after 2 years). Ix-nay on my motorized transportation for fall semeseter. My younger sister decides all-out warfare on me for not being able to make her state soccer match. Nothing new (I’m “home” for an average of 2 months a year and usually miss everything but Thanksgiving and Christmas). So my mom and dad decide that I need to take a mental break and go to north of Minneapolis with the entire family (2.5 hours’ worth of driving) at 9 AM on Saturday for my sister’s soccer match, come back around 3, pack the puttering Chevy Suburban with my gear (a 2-hour ordeal in and of itself because there’s no extra truck bed to do overflow), then leave after dinner for mid-Iowa. Then, Sunday morning, we can eat a leisurely breakfast at McDonald’s, leave at 9 AM from Iowa, and get to MU at 12 or 1 PM. I have to be completely moved in by 3 and stay in the building until dinner, which blows my plans to take my mom out to her favorite Mexican place just off campus.
I am PISSED. I feel really selfish and stupid, but man…I don’t feel like driving all day to Minneapolis, then to home, then to Owatonna. Then waking up late and not getting time to do anything but toss boxes into my dorm room (which is smaller than the one I was originally assigned to because we have so many freshmen coming in). There’s nothing worse than spending 2 weeks in an ill-organized room, especially if you’re a staff member trying to work on a syllabus. Any thoughts?
