My response to the people who feel a blazing need to inform everyone that they’re leaving individually in their own threads is the standard:
“Don’t let the door hit your ass on your way out.”
Personally, I don’t give a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut WHY anyone’s leaving. Could be the “pay to play” being put into effect. Could be that they no longer have enough time. Could be that they’ve suddenly lost their hands in a horrifying chainsaw accident.
None of that changes my feeling that “I’m leaving” threads are self-indulgent egotistical attention-whoring. If there’re people you want to let know you aren’t posting any more, email them. If you want to know why you haven’t seen someone around in a while, email them. If they don’t have an email listed…then I guess they don’t want anyone to get in touch with them and you’re SOL.
I’m sure ONE “I’d like to stay but I dont have a credit card/can’t use PayPal/am a spy from Mars and therefore unable to send in $4.95” thread - ONE - would be enough for the “Wow, I really want to gift-subscribe someone” people to find their perfect match. Hell, make it a sticky so no one has to worry about it falling off the front page.
The individual “I’m leaving woe is me I just luuuuuurve the hell out of User and User2 and I got so much support from UserWhoRules and I’m so very very sorry that I will no longer be able to share my infinite wisdom with User I Met in thread name” threads are just pap and filler.

The worst thing of all are these people who swear they’re leaving and then a couple of hours later decide to stay because two people posted about how sad they are about it. Just for the record - Really Not All That Bright did request to have his ATMB thread be made a sticky, and the request was declined by the Powers That Be. EddyTeddyFreddy started her own ATMB thread to enquire about ways of setting up something more anonymous, and that too morphed into an “ask for/offer to help” thread, so now we have two.
It would have been a helluva lot easier to have everything consolidated into one thread visible to all at the top of every forum, but apparently it ain’t gonna happen.
I have no clue how often you read those threads (I hope it’s often and that I’m just not remembering you because otherwise, your following me there is just a little bizarre.) but if you’re familiar with them, you’d know that they’re full of hyperbole. Yes, I’m sad to see **Tars ** go and I’m relieved to see **viva ** staying but to try to paint my hyperbolic comments in an old (and hence not new, which is what this rant is about) thread where others like me would want to know about any departures as having a nervous breakdown is pretty fucking ignorant, in addition to being creepy as hell.

And if you would read my OP and the other posts in this thread, you would see I have said numerous times that my problem with the current subscription brouhaha is over the amount of threads posted. I don’t really give a fuck how emotional people get over other peoples’ departures because, as I said in my OP, I understand that people here have friends and even loved ones they might not see again after this plan kicks in.
Maybe if, instead of trying to impress us with your knowledge of how to use a dictionary and thesaurus, you would brush up on your reading comprehension, you might understand the point of my OP.

Hell, I’ll go out on a limb and say this thread is one of the reasons I’m staying. I was just gonna pile on the ol “don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out” school of thought, but Kal’s “miss me” and Tar’s “go to hell” highlight the adolescent humor that enlivens a jet lagged China Guy’s afternoon as he kills time reading the SDMB before heading home. Not to mention the poster that said it’s only $5 fricking dollars in an early post on page one and in a much more eloquent way than I could have. To miss all this for five clams would be absurd.
