Any suggestions as to what I should do right now?
Isn’t there some product I can get at Walmart or someplace to glue it back in until I can get to the dentist? Don’t know if he will be able to squeeze me in tomorrow. This doesn’t seem like an emergency.
ETA: this is a permanent crown. I’ve had it for years. It’s old (like me). I was eating some Dots.
My dentist always said to put a bit of petroleum jelly on it and stick it back on.
if you have it come off (from a DIY stick it back on) and crush it during biting or swallow it then you have a problem.
chew on other side.
call dentist office, they may have emergency number to a dentist on call, you could get good advice.
That’s just too weird. Same thing just happened to me. In my case, though, it’s a temporary crown, and the dentist gave me some epoxy-type cement to put in the crown and stick back on in case it came off. It’s called Kerr Temp Bond NE, and you basically squeeze out equal amounts of a base and an accelerator, mix it up with a toothpick, poke it into the hole(s) in the crown and stick it back on. So far so good.
You obviously don’t have any of this stuff, and I’m not sure if there’s anything like it available in pharmacies. The stuff I have looks like a little sample packet. I’ve heard the petroleum jelly thing works, or OTC denture adhesive.
I had one fall off last week. I just popped it back into place, sans glue, and chewed on the other side. Made an appointment with the dentist about three days later, and he glued it back in. No biggie at all.
Thanks for the replies. I just found this stuff at the drugstore- Dentex Temparin. Gonna try it in a bit. The crown that fell out has a little hole worn in it- as I said, it’s REALLY old. In fact, the dentist that put it in is long deceased. I’m guessing the new dentist will want to do a new crown. I just ordered a new computer… bad timing, eh? <shrug> Oh well… it’s only money.
I didn’t want to put it back in without some kind of stick-um. I’m afraid of swallowing it while I’m asleep.
You also don’t want to re-attach it too firmly - might make a mess when your dentist needs to take it out again.
FWIW, I had a crown put in last year. When I was fitted with a temporary crown, my dentist warned me that it was possible that the temporary crown could come loose. He told me that if that happened, a dab of toothpaste would be sufficient to hold the crown in place.
Oh dear, this is making me have a toothache from just thinking about it! These crowns that have popped off and on again - are they post root-canal? I have a new crown , and am getting fitted for the second one next week - but no root canal, just replacing enamel - I would think if the crown came off it would cause excruciating pain! Please tell me I won’t be in excruciating pain if my crown comes off.
