Just joined Netflix; need movie recommendations

The title of the thread pretty much sums up what I’m looking for here. Any of you netflix goers out there have any suggestions about cinematic gems you found on netflix, I’m all ears.

I just have to say, patiently waiting for my first 3 movies to arrive (“Love Liza”, “The Transporter”—hey, I like Luc Besson, and “No Man’s Land”), that I’m experiencing a complete joygasm at the vast array of interesting movies from which to choose. They have a huge collection of Woody Allen movies, obscure foreign films, and various things which I always meant to see, but never got around to (I’ve never seen a “Godfather” movie, for instance—#5 on my queue as we speak).

So yeah, any suggestions one might have, I’d be interested in hearing.

Bottle Rocket - The first movie Luke and Owen Wilson were in, and directed by Wes Anderson (Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore.)
It’s my favorite movie ever.

Bottle Rocket is a great movie.

It begs the question “how does an asshole like Bob get such a great kitchen?”

“Snatch”: Excellent English gangster film with Brad Pitt
“Miller’s Crossing”: Excellent Irish gangster film with Gabriel Byrne

I too am a Netflix customer and I was pleasantly suprised to learn that whenever you order a “box set” (I rented the “Band of Brothers” DVDs) they will ship you the DVDs successively. I only rented out 1 at a time and when I would get it, I would then put the next one on my list. As soon as I would ship a DVD back to Netflix, they always filled the boxset order first. I never waited weeks on end to get the next in the series. They did this with ALL the boxsets I rented.

Oh yeah, “Band of Brothers”: Excellent WWII HBO series by Speilberg and Tom Hanks!

Wow. I’ve seen all those movies, although MIller’s Crossing is on my queue list as it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it. I LOVED Band of Brothers, especially how the different directors kept the ideas for each episode shifting in focus.
Thanks for the suggestions, though; I see we have similar (meaning exquisite) taste in movies.

Raging Bull
Sunset Boulevard
Blood Simple
All About Eve
Midnight Cowboy
Double Indemnity
Forbidden Planet
Taxi Driver
Chinatown

pugluvr: i’ve heard of all of those except for “Double Indemnity” and, after seeing its synopsis, I’m very intrigued. It’s on my list.
Thanks.

Netflix is great. I’ve been a member for abotu 6 months and I’m amazed at how quickly they turn the disc around. I live near their HQ, and if I put a disc in the mail on Monday, my new one arrives on Wed. I wish they had a better web site in terms of just what this thread is dedicated to. They don’t do a very good job of creating lists of customers’ favorites.

If you liked Snatch, get Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Also, Memeto. Gotta love that one.

I got all the old Sopranos, too. Very good.

I’m surprised PUGLUVR didn’t include:

Body Heat (Kathleen Turner when she was HOT!!)
Very Bad Things

If you like Woddy Allen, try Crimes and Misdemeamors

Absolutely amazing movie. I caught it on tv a few nights ago. It was surprising to see the two storylines work so well together—the funny Woody Allen in love story and the horrifically real Martin Landau in a moral dilemma story. Great, great movie.

It’s funny that you recommend this, though; every comedy Netflix recommends to me is a Woody Allen movie.

I’ve also seen both recommended Guy Ritchie movies (excellant flicks) and Very Bad Things (I thought it was overrated). I’ve never quite been a fan of the Sopranos, though. It never really captivated me; probably because cinema has been innundated with mob movies and so forth for years and I just grew tired of it.

I live close to Chicago and they have a shipping center there or near there, so I’m expecting to get my movies quickly. At least, that’s my general hope. I work with UPS everyday and they seem to ship faster than advertised, which is always a plus.

I would suppose if you went browsing on Netflix and rated all the movies you’d ever seen, then Netflix itself would now know enough about your likes/dislikes to make some good recommendations for you.

In a perfect world, of course.

I don’t know if they’ve got these, they are all very worthwhile Australian movies you probably haven’t seen:

Two Hands Heath Ledger, Bryan Brown, Rose Byrne, Susie Porter. Gritty but often funny lowlife gangster tale.

The Interview Hugo Weaving, Claustrophobic thriller about a battle of wits between a cop and a car theft suspect.

Proof Hugo Weaving, Russell Crowe. Black comedy about a blind photographer and his relationships.

Dirty Deeds Bryan Brown, Toni Collette, John Goodman, Sam Neill. Fact based gangster tale from the 1960’s. A nice line of laconic Aussie humour.

Romper Stomper Russell Crowe. Grimly realistic portrayal of suburban neo-nazis.

Soft Fruit No-one you know. A family who make your family look normal gathers around the dying mum.

Lantana Anthony LaPaglia, Geoffrey Rush, Barbara Hershey. A missing persons case gives us a look at four marriages. Cool atmospheric minimalist soundtrack from Paul Kelly.

Mr Reliable Colin Friels. True story of a household seige from more innocent times. Funnier because it’s true.

Spotswood Anthony Hopkins, Ben Mendelsohn, Russell Crowe, Toni Collette. Low key comedy about an efficiency expert at a family factory. Early Crowe and Collette in smallish parts.

Strictly Ballroom Paul Mercurio, Gia Carides. Romantic Comedy set in the world of ballroom dancing. A real hoot, with all Baz Luhrman’s flash done on the cheap.

Shine Geoffrey Rush. True story of disturbed pianist David Helfgott. Terrific on lots of levels.

Angel Baby Colin Friels, Jacqueline McKenzie. Two schizophrenics fall in love and have a baby. Hard going and a real blubberfest for many. McKenzie is gorgeous.
