Just letting it out

I just want to get this off my chest. I got no one to talk to and I feel bad. My dog just broke his leg and his cries just broke my heart. Had his leg x-rayed and he’s resting at the pet hospital. I feel empty. I didn;t know it would make me feel this way. It’s nighttime now and every little noise outside makes me think of the little fellow. I just miss the guy. :(:(:frowning:

I’m sorry about your dog. I know you miss him, but he’s probably been given some pain medication? And it’s best if they keep an eye on him until it wears off. I’m glad you were able to get him to the hospital to get taken care of. Please post back when you pick him up!

Aw! I’m sorry about your dog, deadindays.
You did what you could for him, and that was the most important thing. Another good thing, is that he’ll be coming back home soon. You’ll both feel much better when that happens!

Ultimately it turned out her ball-and-socket joint had been shattered (possibly a car hit her) and never fixed, perhaps she was a stray at the time. She had bone grinding on bone in the socket. The vets decided to cut away the corroded bone and removed the whole top part of her femur, allowing a new “soft tissue” joint to form that wouldn’t hurt her when she walked.

The above detail is just to set the scene – you can imagine that having your femur pulled out of your pelvis and lopped off is a pretty major operation. She was in the hospital in a world of hurt and they permitted us to come visit her. As it turned out, she was doped out of her mind and spent the entire visit curled into a ball without recognizing us.

Hopefully your doggie is pain-free and sleeping and you’ll be reunited soon!

Oh, I remember when my poor little Tammy had to have surgery which warranted an overnight stay at the vet’s. I was sixteen. When I came home from school and she wasn’t there it was just…empty. And that night was the first time in nine years, since we got her, that she didn’t come wandering into my bedroom at some point during the night. It just feels so lonely.

I hope your buddy’s snoozing blissfully, dreaming doggie-drug dreams about belly rubs and Milkbones, and I know he’ll be so happy to see you when you’re reunited.

Holy Moses, Sailboat, that’s one helluvan operation! Anyway, we’re here for ya, deadindays. And no, it’s always pretty horrible to listen to the cries of pain of a creature you care for.

I’m sorry. :frowning: I also hope your dog is sleeping and pain-free right now this very minute!

It sucks, but you’re just getting started. The real fun begins when he comes home!
I know you feel bad for the little guy, but no matter how bored he is or how heartrending his complaints, do exactly what the vet tells you for after care. Don’t let him run until he’s ready, don’t let him jump on things, and do whatever you need to with regard to crate rest. I’m telling you this as someone who slept in shifts for two weeks (to stop bandage chewing) and kept an active dog in crate rest for six effing months (a dog who, by the way, is now in perfect health and always impresses the vet with how perfect her surgery outcome was whenever she goes in for x-rays). No matter how annoying it is, it’s worth it.
He’ll be home soon, and then you’ll at least have more control over it. I felt a lot better after our beast got home from surgery, even if it did mean we had to walk her with a sling.

Yeah, my little girl will be getting cataract surgery sometime in the near future. I’m told there is a very very low rate of problems - but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a surgeon say: Wow, we have *never *seen *that *before. So no doubt I’ll be a wreck while she’s in.

Sending out healing thoughts to your pup.

It’s an empty feeling when they’re not there. The good news is your pup is getting the help you’re both so lucky to have available.

Plus, the clown collar of comedy when he’s feeling a bit more spry.

I’m glad your dog is going to be okay…I know you miss him, but it sounds like he’ll be okay. My kitten just had an eye removed and you’d never know she had a thing done (other than the missing eye of course.) Think positive thoughts! Your pal will be home soon.

If it makes you feel any better, I work offshore for 29 days at a time and I always miss my kitty and my BF’s puppy (who is practically ours together now)… so, you aren’t the only one missing your furry one.

Aww, poor puppy. Poor you. I hope he comes home soon!

I remember when my little dachshund, Brownie, hurt her back and had to sleep over at the vet’s. I worried that she was in pain or scared or cold- she hated to even think there was a possibility she might get cold!

But she came home soon and recovered well! Best wishes!

What kind of dog?

Seconding this. A lapse in attentiveness and we found our girl had climbed the stairs. I foolishly thought she wouldn’t follow me from room to room (on the main floor) unless she felt up to it. It slowed her recovery by months, although she’s fine now.

I hope your pup is home and feeling better again soon.

Make sure you visit him in the morning, when the vet opens, make sure they are taking good care of him. Odds are, they are.

Visit him before they close, depending on how long they need to keep him. Let them know you are going to be a pain in the ass, if need be.

Quite the # of years ago, I had a pup with parvo, and they kept her at the vet, and little did I know they just leave them at night. Like a warehouse… If I knew then what I know now, I would have taken her home and I’d still have her. ASK what they are doing, its in their financial interest for the dog to stay there overnight, might not be in your dog’s best interest.

Nothing worse than the suffering of someone or something defenseless, especially one you care about. I feel your pain.

Poor guy. And poor you. I always hate it when one of my guys has to overnight at the vet - I imagine all sorts of terrible things. Fprtunately it has been surprisingly rare. He’ll soon be home and you can hover over him and worry some more.

Oh, poor thing! :frowning:

Please keep us updated. Sending hugs to you and your sweet puppy.

He’s back! He limps around and cries a bit once in a while. He has a hard time lying down and was leaning on me the whole time when I got him back. The doctor gave me some anti-inflammatory and calcium pills. I might have to crush them first and blend them in with his food because he keeps spitting the pills out. Thank you, thank you for all the warm wishes everyone - I needed those. I love you all.

Ps. Joey (my dog) is a Philippine dog. I “rescued” him from a lady who obviously didn’t have the means to take care of him so I took him in.

A Philippine street dog or raised by a Philippine family, or…?

My dog is a Mexican Pug-- she still responds slightly better to Spanish but prefers I order Chinese food

Yay for Joey!
