Just so you know(about savekaryn.com)

The irony about her Today show appearance today is that the producer got a hold of her at Bloomingdale’s, where she was shopping.

I did see the interview, though. I just don’t remember much about it.

Robin

So, she was shameless. Big whoop.

I think apathy would get to her more that hating her.

You are vastly overestimating the importance of money in determining character. I’ve had the privilege of “bailing out” a few friends who got into trouble because of poor spending and saving habits. I’d consider each and every one of them to be a person of exemplarly character.

My opinion of people who’d make a judgment such as yours, however – well, I guess I’d have to know more about the person in toto, but I’d have an initial bias.

His “red” sentence was a bit over the top, Sublight. As was stated earlier in this thread, she didn’t deceive anyone. She didn’t force anyone to give her money, didn’t ask for money under false pretenses. If she had said something like, “I’m $20,000 in debt and I need to support my seven babies because their no-good daddy ran out on me and I have no job except for the local bus depot,” then that deception would incur my … well, not my wrath, but certainly my disdain and disinterest - and certainly not my money.

His “red” sentence was presumptuous because it implies that if one does not agree with the statement, then that person is a pretty low character. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not fond of condescending, me-right/you-wrong attitudes.

Likewise, I would hope my charcter not to be judged based on my spelling.

I don’t have too much sympathy for her-and the fact that she says in one her weekly updates that she bought clothes for a People article, left the tags on them, then returned them-that’s really shitty. Yeah, so people do it all the time. Too bad.

I just find her shallow beyond belief. I mean, Prada and Kate Spade and Versace and Gucci and all that crap. I have a Gucci suitcase as a HAND ME DOWN. (I think it was my gramma’s neighbor’s-I don’t know where my mom got it).

I don’t think she’s a total bitch-like I did at first. I think she’s probably nice to be around, but completely shallow. She likes cats, and she spoils her cat and treats him well. That’s cool.
But begging-I dunno, I guess it’s my stubborn pride, but I find it amusing that so many are willing to defend her, but complain about people on welfare or social security. No, I’m not talking about this place-just society in general. They think it’s “cute” that she got rid of her debt by begging, but god forbid someone need a little extra help from the government gets it. Yeah, that’s probably a logical fallacy. But it’s just my observation.

When I was 12, I saw my dad lose his job after we had just bought a house, and he had to accept unemployment and odd jobs, but we got buy. But I can’t see my dad begging.
However, these do not endear me to her:

Oh, the “fat guy”…can you be anymore patronizing? Ick.

If you are my friend, and you do this, you will no longer be my friend.

Don’t get me started on the lottery. I ran a lottery machine back when I worked at a groccery store. People would spend fifty dollars, win twenty-five, and think they were ahead. The sad thing is that it was mostly the elderly and people on fixed incomes.

Oh but he bought you a free drink! Teehee!

I’m just glad she didn’t spam me.

Good for her. She not only found a way out, but did it by being totally up-front about it. I’m not saying it’s right, but hey…for now, at least, she’s out of debt.

Didn’t scam anybody out of anything and didn’t try to sell them crap or do any “stay-at-home-make-zillions” schemes.

I didn’t give her a cent. Therefore, I’m definitely not pissed at her. Nobody had to give her anything. Evidently, many people wanted to.

"But begging-I dunno, I guess it’s my stubborn pride, but I find it amusing that so many are willing to defend her, but complain about people on welfare or social security. "

Hmm…you do have a point. Just that welfare and social security are paid for by taxes, which some people think is “stealing” to give it to the “wastral poor”.

I know. But people seem to say, “Oh, they just want a hand out!”
Well, so does this woman. Or people who complain about homeless, who are “homeless by choice.” THAT phrase pisses me off to no end.

Guin,

I didn’t have the interest level to go visit her site, but were those her actual entries you quoted?

“I scored some drinks.”
“I scored some food.”
“I scored $25.”
“I scored another drink.”

She sounds like a junkie of some kind.

At my work, we got in the news Star Wars Ep 2 DVDs. We got in two versions, the standard one, and a “Special Edition.”

The Special Edition came in a cardboard case.

We decided to open it up to see what the difference between the standard and the special edition was.

Well, you see the Special Edition has a cardboard case. Inside the cardboard case is the standard DVD.

You pay $5 extra for a piece of cardboard. Many people are doing this.

So, if Karyn gave away a cardboard case with every $5 donation, would she be a super businesswoman a la George Lucas?

People waste their money on all kinds of things. Karyn is no worse than George Lucas.

Her scheme for making the money doesn’t piss me off. It’s how fucking stupid she was to spend $400 on a pair of shoes and $500 on a purse that pisses me off. What the fuck? I’m sorry, but if you spend $500 on a purse, you’re an idiot. A shallow idiot. If you are going to buy something expensive, at least buy something REAL not something that is only expensive because stupid people think that the label is cool.

Your right. She deserves our utmost respect.

Wait, no she doesn’t. She’s a begger. And a very well dressed one at that. :smack:

As Twisty said, she didn’t eat anything.

She went out, spent extravagently, then got others to pay her bills. And she got to keep the stuff. Brass balls, like I said. But she took no responsibility. She did not pay her own debt. Christ, she turned a profit. Anyone who sent her a dime should be embarrassed.

I got caught up in credit card debt. Got in way over my head.
I didn’t ask for handouts. I didn’t ask anyone to bail me out. I changed my ways and paid my debts.

well, she did sell alot of her stuff and move apartment, but even at that only paid off one third her debt.

two thirds were paid off.

which asks the question, if she sold off everything she bought, moved to a cheaper place, and went around scavenging freebies off everyone (saving money by not spending it, and still only managed to pay off a third, Just how was she living before?

(I realise you were responding to Hail Ants, but I did say I agreed with him)

Perhaps I do place too much importance on money and fiscal responsibility, but I consider how responsible people are with their money to be a good indicator of how much responsibility they’ll show when entrusted with more important things.

And no, what I feel toward her is not jealousy, it is an utter absence of respect.

I missed that part.

From her site

PAID OFF: $20,000

AS OF NOVEMBER 10, 2002…
TOTAL RECEIVED FROM NICE PEOPLE: $13,323.08
TOTAL MADE THROUGH EBAY SALES: $4,340.60
TOTAL PAID BY ME: $2,336.32

It isn’t the importance of money, its the importance of responsibility. It doesn’t matter that she didn’t ‘scam’ anyone. It’s not her actions that really bother me. Its her attitude towards them. And that was the point of my red statement.

I’ve personally known people like her. They feel that because they used a credit card to buy foolish, trivial things that its ok to weasel out of eventually paying for them. Their attitude is, “Well, it’s not like it was real money, it was a magical credit card. And its not like it was important stuff, just toys!”

The thing is, that makes it doubly important. A credit card is not pretend money, its (eventually) the exact same thing as cash out of your pocket. And personal luxury items should be last on your list of financial priorities.

But even more than that, it absolutely sickens me to see this woman (and people on this board) actually be proud of what she did. That fact that she used a web site does not make it ‘innovative’ or ‘creative’ or positive in any way whatsoever! And yet people seem to think that the way she did it outweights what she did. To use an extreme example, its like praising a pervert for using the internet to distribute their kiddie porn. Um, excuse me, but being incredibly irresponsible via a ‘cool new’ medium does not make the actions any less so.

This woman does not deserve praise or admiration of any kind. She deserves pity for just doing what she did. And she absolutely deserves scorn, disdain, ridicule, open hostility and humiliation for being proud of what she did.

Saying she should be beaten up was over the top. But she deserves to be put in stocks in the town square and pelted with garbage!

I literally would have more respect for her if she had become a stripper or even a hooker to pay off her debt. Including if she was proud that she did it that way.

I guess I should just say that I pity this woman more than I hate her.

Why all the scorn for her, and none for all the people who gave her the money? Does her greed so vastly outweigh their idiocy? It only worked because they made it work, ya know.

Little fucking bitch. Twenty fucking thousand dollars in just credit card debt! And even though she apparently has her debt paid off, she has the audacity to write

This is a woman who buys designer clothes and then buys herself a website to dig herself out of a hole. Her self-righteous attitude in her FAQ’s absolutely disgusts me. Anyone who was stupid enough to send her money so she could just get herself into more debt later simply amazes me. I mean, the bitch actually thinks that buying Oil of Olay and Old Navy is being “done with my frivolous ways” (see http://www.savekaryn.com/_wsn/page2.html) Fuck!!

pant pant

This college student who is scraping to get together a (what you would consider pathetically) small amount of money to pay for tuition and books next semester, and who doesn’t carry credit card debt (because I get my clothes at Target and Kmart and I buy Suave products) is truly pissed.
