I swear I read some of these same arguments in a GBS thread on Something Awful like five days ago. Oh, wait. I did!
I thought elmwood’s one playing on the famed vulture photo was the only really funny one (but it was funny).
I don’t think that in any significant way makes me less sympathetic to the plight of that poor child (or, for that matter, that poor photographer). It’s just an iconic photo defaced “inappropriately”, in precisely the way the thread calls for. The sheer brash incongruity of it strikes me as humorous.

I didn’t get past the Lee Harvey Oswald one myself. Stoopid. Now the version of that picture that was photoshopped to be a rock band? That was funny as hell.
Actually, you’d be surprised at some of the esoteric references I’ve seen in SA threads, but what I was talking about were the arguments about the pictures, not the pics themselves.
EDIT: Here’s the bling thread from SA. I think bad words are censored for non-members, but you can still look at the pics. Aaand, it looks like I was wrong anyway. The arguments there were mostly along the lines of “not funny,” not so much about poor taste.
- The thread you were reading was not serious. It was clearly marked as such, in a forum tagged “Mundane Pointless Stuff.”
- As far as I know, mostly adults posted in that thread. They found it, if not funny, then at least amusing or at the very least a decent way to kill 15 minutes. Perhaps the thread should have been put in the Game Room board; if that’s your complaint, I agree. That’s where most of our time-wasting threads live.
- The Fighting Ignorance slogan works out just fine in the boards dedicated to it.
- We know it’s an actual thread. You linked it.
- Your value judgement has been taken into account. I didn’t even have to open the thread to know that I had zero interest in it; it was explicitly named and nothing posted in the thread went beyond the thread name. Bling? Inappropriate pictures? Check.
You didn’t even find this mildly amusing? Also, considering you waited all of 21 posts, of which only 11 contained actual user-made examples and then jumped down the throat of a guy clearly marking his example as highly inappropriate . . . I’m finding it increasingly hard to sympathize with this pitting.

Eh. I clicked on a couple of links in that thread and didn’t think they were all that. I wasn’t personally offended by them, though. This seems like RO to me. If some people find them funny, their mileage obviously varies. Sure it’s in bad taste, but I’m not going to presume to tell people what they ought to find humorous. I like “offensive” humor myself. I just didn’t find any funny examples in that thread. It was sufficient enough for me to leave it alone and not pay it any more mind.
