Justice League - 6/11/05 (US) (open spoilers)

I didn’t really like this one that much.

I mean the whole Superman and Captain Marvel slugfest has been done to death and this was quite possibly the most contrived version of it I’ve seen.

Then why did Luthor steal **weapons-**grade Kryptonite to make an energy reactor? Shouldn’t he have stolen **reactor-**grade Kryptonite?

And for that matter, shouldn’t Supes have thrown the recent theft of the only quantity of Kryptonite capable of doing what Luthor said it was going to do right back in Luthor’s face? “The only two places in the world that have that much stockpiled special-K are Star Labs and my Fortress of Solitude, neither of which has any record of any recent Kryptonite sales.”

I got to watch the last few seconds when my DVR picked up a Sunday rebroadcast.

We didn’t miss much. Just that Luther and Waller’s plan went better than expected and that they were in it together.

To throw Supes off. Besides, who said that it ran on weapons grade K? Besides, maybe Lex has his own store of the stuff.

Superman first appeared in National Comics’ Action Comics #1, cover dated June 1938. Captain Marvel first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #2, February, 1940. Well, he really first appeared in some ashcans Fawcett published in very limited quantities to secure trademark protection, but that was only a couple months earlier at best. National sued Fawcett over their similarities.

And won, which is why DC’s been playing with Cap since the 70s, at least.

By that time Marvel had its’ own Captain Marvel, so DC had to call their Captain Marvel book “The Power of SHAZAM!” CM never regained the popularity that he once had. In the Golden Age he routinely out-sold Superman.

This is like a story writing thread, only its’ history instead of fiction.

Given where Captain Marvel gets his powers from, shouldn’t he and Diana at least know each other in passing?

Nah…Diana gets hers directly…Cap’s are by proxy via Shazam.

Cap’s powers may be by proxy, but he’s Superman-level strength and invulnerability. That’s greater than Diana. The wisdom of Solomon, however, is vastly overrated; Diana smarter than Cap and Supes combined.

Second favorite exchanges was Batman calling Captain Marvel a boyscout and Superman taking umbrage.

It settled, actually, with Fawcett promising to never publish the Big Red Chesse again. Fawcett sold all its stuff to Charlton. DC began leasing the Marvel Family from Charlton in the '70’s and then bought them outright (with most all of the rest of Charlton’s characters) in the early '80’s.

That’s the first I’ve ever heard of Fawcett selling to Charlton, rather than directly to National/DC. As far as I know (as a bit of a Charlton fan who has done some research into their publishing history), Charlton was never involved. Not trying to be combative, but do you have a cite for that?

Interesting analysis of the episode over on Websnark.

Miller. I know this comes some 12 days late, but thank you for that link.
