"Justified" - new FX series - anyone watch?

No, I don’t think it’s a stretch; I agree with your assessment. As he said, deep down he’s always known his daddy would betray him, but until he saw him repeatedly checking his watch and heard the car doors close, he didn’t want to believe it. He pulled his gun out of self defense but was still shocked when the threat became real.

Thinking about Sepinwall’s criticism of the finale:

“My problem is that the writers spent most of the year deconstructing Raylan - putting him in an uncomfortable setting, rubbing his nose in the consequences of his trigger-happy ways and turning him from the supremely confident man who killed Tommy Bucks and snatched a shotgun out of Dewey Crowe’s hands into a more uncertain figure who was almost desperate to prove he could solve problems without resorting to lethal force - and then largely reverted him back to bad-ass Raylan without a big transformative moment in between. The Raylan of this episode isn’t exactly the man he was in the pilot - for one thing, he’s again hatless for a good chunk of the action - but I still wanted the moment when he takes out Bo’s first two goons to feel like it mattered to him more than it did, whether it was frustration that he has to kill people even when he’s not trying to set people up for justified shootings, or a recognition that it doesn’t automatically say something about him every time he has to use his gun.”

My quibble with this quibble is that it appears the critic doesn’t have any real experience with behavioral transformations. You can try and try and try to change or better understand something about yourself, but when a major stressor pops up, you revert to type just like the intervening period never happened.

In my younger days I’d fight just about anyone who offended me. Over time I realized that wasn’t a healthy way to go about things and learned to control my temper and defuse most situations. That said, my first instinct is still to fight and if it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any other way out, I won’t bother to try avoiding it. Luckily, those situations are extremely few and far between.

I think there was a transformative moment in this episode, and it was when Raylan turned around to find his daddy pointing a gun at him. From that point on, it looked to me like Raylan was on auto-pilot. He had to do something to resolve things, and if it involved another shootout with bad guys, so be it. No matter how bad your relationship is with your daddy, it’s gotta be traumatic to see that they’re willing to shoot you, even if it’s just in the leg.

Although I can’t be 100% convinced by the footnotes at Justified (TV series) it would seem that the fact is a cinch but the timing is still up in the air. It can’t come too soon. Nor can I think of any series I have been used to seeing that would get priority over it – in terms of what I’d watch and what I’d DVR.

The only real competition for it, as I see it:

Breaking Bad
Dexter
The Good Wife
Sons of Anarchy
Mad Men
House
Bones
Fringe
and at least one I can’t remember at the moment!

Aside from Olyphant himself, there were quite a few Deadwood actors guest-starring on Justified (as well as Sons of Anarchy). I’m hoping Gerald McRaney, Garret Dilahunt, and Ian McShane show up next season.
